Beastie Boys Book: Adrock & Mike D To Write “Multidimensional” Band Memoir

Surviving Beastie Boys members Adam Horovitz (“Ad-Rock”) and Michael Diamond (“Mike D”) have signed a deal to write a memoir about their hip-hop trio, which also included Adam Yauch (“MCA”), who died last year after a bout with cancer. Random House imprint Spiegel & Grau, the publishers behind Jay-Z‘s Decoded, took on the still-untitled project, which is set for a fall 2015 release.

According to the publisher, Horovitz and Diamond are “interested in challenging the form and making the book a multidimensional experience.” So what exactly does that mean? Well, the book “will be loosely structured as an oral history. It will also have contributions by other writers, as well as a strong visual component.” More »

2012 MTV Video Music Awards: The Best & Worst Moments

Despite all the big-name performers and presenters, the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday were generally underwhelming. There’s usually a singular “goosie” experience (for instance, Adele last year) or an instant headline (the Kanye interruption). But this year there were no such capital-M Moments. That’s not to say there weren’t some truly enjoyable moments. Head below to catch what we singled out as our five favorite and five least favorite parts of the show. More »

Beastie Boys Sue Monster Energy Drink For Using Their Music

The Beastie Boys will fight for their right to protect their music. The group is suing Monster Energy Corp. for illegally using several of their songs in a series of ads, against the wishes of the trio’s late member, Adam “MCA” Yauch.

Yauch, who died in May after a long bout with cancer, stipulated in his will that his image and music could not be used for advertising purposes. His wife, Dechen Yauch, has the right to sell and manage his artistic property, as long as his music and image not be used for commercial use.

Monster’s 2012 Ruckus in the Rockies promo video appeared on the company’s website in May 2012, and used Beastie songs like “Sabotage,” “So What’cha Want” and “Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun.” Mike D, Ad-Rock and the estate of Yauch are seeking unspecified damages, alleging copyright infringement and a host of other intellectual property violations. This weekend marks the 11th iteration of Manchester, Tennessee’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. At the inaugural fest in 2002, it was a jam-band paradise, heavy on the noodling but light on the zeitgeist. Featuring everyone from Bon Iver to Skrillex to Das Racist, Bonnaroo clearly has its finger on the pulse of pop music. So ahead of Bonnaroo’s 11th running, here are 11 great pop moments in the festival’s history, in no particular order. More »

Chris Brown Dedicates His Bratty “Till I Die” Video To Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch

chris brown till i die
Breezy Cuts Loose
We’re not entirely unconvinced that Chris Brown‘s new video for “Till I Die” isn’t a straight-up parody. Instead of trying to convince us he’s a sex object by having women fawn all over him (or float above him), Breezy — with a mouth overflowing with gold teeth and matching bling draped across his chest — steps right into the role of a douchebag, as he introduces himself by tripping a co-worker who obviously didn’t need one more thing to go wrong that day. M83 Give A Nod To Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch In “Reunion” Video

Watch M83 Shout Out MCA
The influence of Beastie BoysAdam Yauch is still coming to light weeks after his untimely death. The latest comes courtesy of French electro rockers M83‘s new video, “Reunion”, off their impressive 2011 release Hurry Up We’re Dreaming. Directed by Fleur & Manu and produced by DIVISION, the clip continues the story begun in the group’s last video “Midnight City”, which saw a bunch of telekinetic Children of the Corn levitating and crushing heavy objects Chronicle-style. Though not the most obvious setting for a memorial, around the 0:43 mark, the camera pans to a GPS device flashing directions to “Adam Yauch Ave” from “Intergalatic St”, and then to “Sabotage St”. It’s a touching little Easter egg that heightens the already epic clip.

Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Covers ‘Rolling Stone’, Mike D & Ad-Rock Share Memories Of MCA

Rolling Stone pays tribute to the late Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch by putting MCA on the cover of their magazine. The music publication spoke to the surviving members of the band, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and Mike “Mike D” Diamond, where they shared memories about working with Yauch, how his Buddhism affected his songwriting, and how they reacted when he revealed that he had cancer — and how they’re currently dealing with his passing. “My wife is like, ‘I want to make sure you’re getting it out,’” shares Ad-Rock. “But then I’m walking the dog and I’ll start crying on the street.” Read excepts below. :: When John Legend‘s model fiancée Chrissy Tiegan criticized Chris Brown‘s Billboard Music Awards performance on Twitter (hey, join the club, Chrissy!) she probably had no idea she would be recieving death threats (and worse) from members of Team Breezy. “Lets stop sending death threats!” Brown tweeted today to his followers. “I know y’all bout that life but it’s the wrong message! Ur turning haters into victims!” [ONTD]

:: Legend, who also performed during the awards show, supported his lady. “Every artist has to be ok with the fact that some people won’t like their work. All critics aren’t ‘haters,’” he tweeted, likely in reference to Brown’s comment. “And don’t ever tell me to put my ‘bitch on a leash’. She’s a grown woman with her own mind and her own opinions and this is not 1950.” You tell ‘em, John. [E! Online]

:: Lea Michele surprised David Letterman by admitting she has 14 secret tattoos hidden all over her body. And as evidenced by her revealing outfit, clearly none of them are located her boobs. [Pink Is The New Blog]

:: 2 Chainz was arrested at New York’s LaGuardia airport on Tuesday (May 22) for possessing “brass knuckles” in his bag. Metal knuckles are viewed as a weapon, though the rapper’s friend Big Sean says they were strictly used for fashion: “2 chainz ain’t have no brass knuckles, it was a 4 finger ring that spelled hood,” he wrote. “We had a shoot yesturday n he was rockin em.” [MTV]
