There is no question that Diddy (or is it P. Diddy nowadays?) is a hugely influential music mogul, ever since his job as a record executive in the ’90s era. But there have been many instances where the businessman fell short of doing his job. Bad Boy Records is notorious for being the Bermuda Triangle of record labels. Sure, there were artists like Faith Evans, and Notorious B.I.G. who scored major success. But many others in the Bad Boy camp could not achieve the same.
So in light of Danity Kane‘s third and final studio album, DK3 (released on October 28), we’re taking a look back at eight of the most overlooked artists who unfortunately succumbed to the Bad Boy curse. but at least they had talent!

Exactly a year ago, we declared 2012 the Year of the EP
, and the trendlet is going strong through another four seasons. Because while big-ticket pop albums left us feeling empty
for the past 12 months, 2013 boasted a wealth of small treasures in the form of expertly crafted EPs and mixtapes.
Our 10 favorites from 2013 comprise stunning new singers arriving on the scene fully formed, a pair of unorthodox young rappers marking their territory, the effortless return of Norwegian pop darling Annie and the reemergence of Cassie. A large chunk of the list is made up of debuts, but all 10 entries were statement releases that found the artist establishing or bolstering an identity.
Below, in no particular order, find the 10 best EPs and mixtapes of the year, as chosen by Idolator’s five editors. More »
, the icy queen of R&B non-releases. The songbird still hasn’t dropped her sophomore LP (and it’s been seven years since her self-titled debut, gulp), but she’s been keeping fans’ appetites sated with killer tracks like “King Of Hearts”
and an omnipresent rash of leaks: But now for something actually official!
Cassie has just unveiled her new song “Indo,” written and produced by Solange for her Saint Heron compilation (which saw Sol-Angel bringing together her favorite alt-R&B talents on one LP), and it’s a typically breathy, airy offering from the songstress, pairing Cassie’s frosty, minimalist sensibilities with Solange’s left-of-center vision. Cooing above the spare track, Cassie sounds gorgeously angelic. More »
has dropped her music video for “Paradise,” the second single off her new mixtape RockaByeBaby
. While she sings of cornering her eye candy in a VIP section (“private location”), the Alex Nazari
-directed clip follows the Bad Boy affiliate as she cruises to public settings scattered around Los Angeles: residential blocks, a liquor store, a stoop. Wiz Khalifa
drops by to do his best Drake
impression (skip to 2:15), bottle on hand. More »
Ah, Cassie —
the queen of icy, low-emoting dance-pop&B. The chanteuse has just dropped “Numb,”
the first video from her upcoming mixtape RockaByeBaby
, and it’s — well, typical Cassie: Sleek and minimalist and a little bit diffuse and overall pretty effective. Helmed by Alex Nazari
and featuring a prominent guest spot from a cigar-puffing Rick Ross
, it’s classic Cassie hipster decadence.
But wait! There’s more where that came from. Her upcoming mixtape, RockaByeBaby (which drops April 11) now has a full tracklist, and it’s loaded with features: Wiz Khalifa, Pusha T, French Montana, Jeremih, Fabolous, Meek Millz, Too Short and Ester Dean. Who else could release such a star-studded mixtape but Cassie, R&B’s ice queen? Surely no one. Check the full track list after the jump, and watch the “Numb” video up top. More »
Alright, so maybe “King of Hearts”
didn’t quite take off in the way that we all imagined it would (global dance smash!), and maybe it’s now been a full seven years since Cassie
released an album, but, well, we just can’t give up on her. We won’t. And so when Cassie drops the teaser for a new song and a new video, we say, “How high?” (Or whatever the expression is.) It’s just how it works.
That brings us to “Numb,” the first single from Cassie’s upcoming mixtape RockaByeBaby, which drops April 11; the track sounds haunting and eerie and minimalist and a little bit trippy and it features Rick Ross and the credits at the end say “Bad Boy/Interscope,” so apparently she’s still on a label! All of which is good news, as far as we’re concerned. But then, Cassie is always good news. More »
Throughout December, Idolator’s editors have rounded up what they deemed to be the best albums
and best EPs of 2012
, and even reviewed the year’s #1 singles
(in one word) — as well as summed up the entire past 12 months (in Post-It notes
). So what’s left to cover? Well, we can think of 12 more things, some of which we never got around to writing about here on the site, but all of which made an impression on us in 2012.
So before you slap on your party hat and get your New Year’s Eve festivities underway, head below to check out our 12 other favorite music-related things from the past year. More »
With even Barack Obama weighing in
on Nicki Minaj
‘s interpersonal drama, you’d expect her to going a little bit higher-concept with her video strategies — maybe a video symbolically depicting her triumph over Mariah Carey
in this year’s election season? — but alas, she’s kept it pretty simple in her video for “The Boys.”
The clip for her latest single, the first taken from her grammatically convoluted Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded — The Re-Up rerelease, just premiered on Vevo and it’s — well, it’s heavy on Minaj’s extraordinary proportions and spectacularly bright colors, although things heat up a bit when Cassie, who performs the song’s hook, shows off her killer body in a white one-piece, followed by a string of successively more glamorous outfits. Even when she’s not sparring with Mariah Carey
, Nicki Minaj
doesn’t seem to have any trouble stirring up controversy. Take, for example, the picture she tweeted recently
of herself with her “The Boys”
collaborator and video co-star Cassie
, which is staged in a, uh, provocative way. A way that would be provocative even if Minaj weren’t totally transparent about her penchant for the ladies
. (Did you ever hear the Christina Aguilera
song Minaj appeared on, “Woohoo”
? If not, count your blessings.)
Here’s what we can tell you about this video: 1) Nicki needs to ditch that rainbow wig stat, 2) Cassie’s body is sick and 3) Wherever this video was shot is exactly how we want our bedroom to look. If this video finally drops tomorrow — which we sincerely hope it does! — it’s bound to be an exceptionally pink Friday.
