makes his film debut in Begin Again
(opening June 27), though his role isn’t exactly a stretch. He plays a rock star who finally lands a big recording deal and starts to earn recognition. (“Are you Dave Kohl?” a fan asks.) Plus, a new song featured in the trailer, “Lost Stars,” recalls Levine’s own humbler beginnings: when pop-rock outfit Kara’s Flowers reconvened and embraced R&B
as Maroon 5
. He comes close to crying out the few falsetto notes heard here, even as the understated acoustic ballad starts to build.
But the resemblance between Levine’s film role and real life is hardly a reason to write off Begin Again. The move was directed by John Carney of Once fame, where The Swell Season‘s Glen Hasard and Marketa Irglova charmed critics by playing two musicians who fall in love as they write music, despite not having any prior acting experience. Begin Again also stars Kiera Knightly as Levine‘s girlfriend, who teams with Mark Ruffalo as a producer and Cee Lo Green as Cee Lo Green (or so it seems, anyway). More »
Did You Hear?
:: Prepare for a burst of nostalgia. Jordan Knight (of New Kids On The Block fame) and Backstreet Boys heartthrob Nick Carter have started their own band called Nick & Knight. Their debut LP is due in September. [Pink Is The New Blog]
:: Cee-Lo Green must be seething. Pharrell admitted in a recent interview that his blockbuster hit “Happy” was originally given to the R&B crooner but his label turned it down. This has to be one of the worst A&R decisions in recent history. [Rolling Stone]
:: The poor thing must be sicker than we first thought. Miley Cyrus has cancelled more concert dates including a show in Amsterdam. You know she’s going to reschedule that one when she’s feeling better. [MTV]
:: With previous owner Donald Sterling banned from the NBA for life after making racist comments on tape, potential buyers for the LA Clippers are starting to come forward including Dr. Dre, Rick Ross and Diddy. [Hip Hop N More]

Cee Lo Green stopped by Ellen
and surprised everyone by announcing that he won’t be returning to The Voice
for the fall season, so that he can focus on his next album and other television opportunities. “I’m going to continue my relationship with NBC. I have a television show development deal with them as well and hopefully some other talk show opportunities for later in the year,” he said. “But yeah, I’m going to miss The Voice
too. So I’m not coming back guys.”
“I’m not coming back at all. I don’t want to wear out my welcome there,” he continued. “I have so many other things that I want to do. I haven’t released an album in four years. I’m almost done with my album.” More »
has maintained a steady ascent into Pop Stardom since we first met his smooth vocals, assisting B.o.B.
on 2010′s breakout single “Nothin’ On You.”
Unbeknownst to the world back then, Bruno was not only an amazing singer, but also a killer songwriter and hitmaking producer. The Los Angeles transplant aligned with creative collective The Smeezingtons
(who also include Phillip Lawrence
and Ari Levine
). Together, The Smeezingtons were responsible for a number of solid tracks (both producing and songwriting) from stars like Alicia Keys
, Justin Bieber
, Far East Movement
, Mike Posner
, and many, many more.
Currently, however, we know Bruno Mars for his ability to craft his own hits. Who hasn’t caught a glimpse of the Hawaii native on his Moonshine Jungle Tour by now? Who doesn’t own a copy of Unorthodox Jukebox (and Doo-Wops & Hooligans while we’re at it)? Bruno Mars has evolved into a national treasure, and as he readies his halftime performance at Super Bowl XLVIII, we take a little trip down memory lane. Let’s revisit some songs that you had no idea were either produced, written, or co-written by Bruno Mars (along with The Smeezingtons). You’ll be surprised by some of the hits that had the seal of the almighty pompadour. More »
Okay, we’re starting to get the picture here — Christina Aguilera
and Cee Lo Green
can only take so much of either The Voice
‘s grueling schedule or the TV overexposure or the combined arrogance of Adam Levine
and Blake Shelton
, so they now just rotate in their backup coaches every other season in order to take a break. Yes, series fill-ins Usher
will reportedly return for the singing competition’s sixth season, after initially making their Voice debut during Season 4
A new twist that should cheer up those of you lamenting the fact that Season 5 just ended this week: The Voice will be back on the air in two months. Season 6 is set for a two-hour premiere on February 24. No time for separation anxiety here. More »

Final 3! The other 17 contestants from this season that have already been forgotten! There is no marquis big enough to fit the superstar names that performed on Tuesday nights’ finale of The Voice
, especially when the slightly-less superstar names of the Top 20 who also performed are added.
All of the coaches come dolled up for the occasion, and whereas Adam Levine and Blake Shelton went safe with suits, Cee Lo goes with a sparkly pinstripe outfit he describes as “disco balls.” Christina Aguilera is also dressed like a slightly more svelte disco ball…or shall we say a disco stick? Perhaps a subliminal nod to Lady Gaga.
Between some incredible duets, requisite “Bring Back” performances and the grand debut of the first ever original single from The Voice, there was a lot happening on Tuesday night beyond a simple results announcement. Here are the highlights. More »
It’s been quite a road from the Blind Auditions to the Finals of The Voice
, with so much happening with both the blooming artists and their already famous coaches. Adam Levine
earned a Sexiest Man Alive honor with his on-again, off-again facial hair. Christina Aguilera
looked slimmer with each episode, and her collaboration with A Great Big World
is still soaring on iTunes and the charts. Cee Lo
‘s 2012 Christmas Album made it onto Rolling Stone
‘s “Essential 40″ list. Blake Shelton
brought home two more CMA Awards (he must be running out of mantel space by now). Carson Daly
begrudgingly took on the duties of the Sprint Sky Box while Christina Milian
lost almost immediately on Dancing with the Stars
. Truly a season for the books. More »
Tuesday night (December 10) was a night of homecomings on The Voice
, now that NBC is using “homecomings” to mean “nights where employed musicians were busy, so we let some former contestants perform and took them out to Red Lobster afterward in lieu of payment.” Even Monday night’s promise that coach Christina Aguilera
would perform turned out to be a blatant lie, and that one loves performing this season!
Perhaps the performance lineup was just an effort to help viewers understand the deep disappointment the soon-to-be eliminated contestants would feel when they exited the stage for the last time. Or, again, all the actual working musicians other than Xtina, Adam Levine, Cee Lo and Blake Shelton were at the American Country Awards in Vegas Tuesday night. Either way. More »
One minute they’re Blind-Auditioning voiceover actors and sitcom stars’ sisters, and the next they’re on to the semi-finals. They grow up so fast on The Voice
! Though Cee Lo
stands sans contestants, proud parents…er…coaches Adam Levine
, Christina Aguilera
and Blake Shelton
are going to any length to win. Help their contestants
win? Nah. They’re basically at the point where Season 6 should be called The Coach

The turkey leftovers have been cleared out, the tree is up and we’re feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of cards that need to be dropped in the mail this month. A good excuse to procrastinate on the latter: We decided that no website is complete at this time of year without a festive playlist, and so to truly get in the spirit of the holidays, that’s exactly what we whipped up for you!
Our criteria was simple: This particular roundup of seasonal hits simply had to be pop-oriented, melodic songs that bring about a grand sense of warmth. Whether it’s Justin Bieber feeling lovey-dovey under the “Mistletoe,” Chris Martin crooning beautifully on Coldplay‘s “Christmas Lights,” Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson harmonizing sweetly over their “Winter Song” or Lady Gaga dreaming of a picture-perfect “White Christmas,” each of the songs below, much like the stocking hung by the chimney, were chosen with care.
So head below and hit play to chill out to our yuletide mix. At the very least, it should cure you of of the Bing Crosby blues the elevator ride put you in. More »
