U2 Apologize (Kind Of) For Surprise ‘Songs Of Innocence’ Release: Morning Mix

Did You Hear?

:: Remember that horrible time when U2 added their new album, Songs Of Innocence, to our iCloud accounts? Well now they are finally apologizing…kind of. The band’s frontman, Bono, addressed the fiasco during a Facebook Q&A session: “Oops. I’m sorry about that. I had this beautiful idea and we got carried away with ourselves. Artists are prone to that kind of thing. Drop of megalomania, touch of generosity, dash of self-promotion, and deep fear that these songs that we poured our life into over the last few years mightn’t be heard. There’s a lot of noise out there. I guess we got a little noisy ourselves to get through it.” [Pitchfork]

:: Tyga spoke with our friends over at Vibe magazine about his experience working with Kanye West on his forthcoming album, The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty. The Young Money rapper stated, “He just told me to come to the studio one day and just gave me and Big Sean this long speech. He was just saying what it is, and what we need to do as young artists and how we just need to take control of this shit. We got the voice, and people follow what we do.” Read what else Tyga had to say here.

:: Erykah Badu took to the streets of New York City to…sing for money? The artist went to the infamous Times Square to see what it was like to perform for the passing tourists. She ended up making $3.60 at the end. [Pigeons & Planes]

:: Britney Spears‘ Las Vegas residency is making the destination city some major bank! The singer’s Planet Hollywood show revenue has boosted the city’s annual earnings by $20 million. That would explain why they extended her residency for two more years…[PopDust]

:: Ariana Grande will be making a return to acting, as she’ll be starring in the animated film UnderdogsGlee star Matthew MorrisonNicholas Hoult and Katie Holmes are also casted. It is set for an April 10, 2015 release. [MTV News]

The Best 2014 Met Gala Selfies And Happy Snaps: 7 Pics Feat. Beyonce, Selena Gomez & Taylor Swift

The who’s who of the pop world showed up for last night’s (May 5) Met Gala. While Beyonce and Rihanna duked it out for best dressed bragging rights on the red carpet, other starlets took the event much less seriously. Selena Gomez, for example, used it as an excuse to catch up with BFF Taylor Swift and stalk her favorite singer — “All Of Me” crooner John Legend.

As the night progressed, selfies and happy snaps eventually made their way to Instagram and Twitter. Lily Allen‘s Sheezus vs. Yeezus moment was the absolute highlight but it was nice to see Bey goofing around with Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu. (She even took over photographer duties to snap a pic of them). Oh, and Rita Ora sure gets around. Her Instagram is a treasure trove of celebrity selfies. More »

Stream Janelle Monae’s Sprawling ‘The Electric Lady’

We’ve got one more album to add to the flood of new music streams this week, with Janelle Monae‘s The Electric Lady streaming in full. The Suite IV-V continuation of her Metropolis/ArchAndroid tale is cinematic and sprawling, equal parts James Bond and Shaft. After a 007-esque intro, the album gets right into the long-awaited Prince collab, “Givin Em What They Love.” That first song is all falsetto wails, sharp guitar lines, horns and, oh yes, a righteous Prince guitar solo (unless it’s Monae’s house guitarist Kellindo Parker…either way, righteous).

Interestingly, Monae doesn’t unload a solo track until “We Were Rock N’ Roll” in the #7 spot. In addition to the many, many guitar solos, the album delves into space funk, quiet storm, rap and swinging ’60s London. It’s all over the place, but it’s all trademark Janelle. Stream all 67 minutes below, courtesy of VH1. More »

Janelle Monae’s ‘The Electric Lady’ Also Features Cee Lo Green, Solange & Big Boi: See The Tracklist

Janelle Monae has released the flashy cover artwork and sprawling tracklist for her forthcoming album The Electric Lady (out September 10). As you can see above, this album comprises Suites IV and V of her ArchAndroid tale, just as she told us it would at Coachella. (And it appears she has at least two more entries in mind for the future.)

As promised, there are cameos from Prince and Miguel (“Givin Em What They Love” and “Primetime,” respectively), plus a guest spot from Solange on the title track and a remix featuring Big Boi and Cee Lo Green. Also in the two-disc, 23-track collection is the Erykah Badu collaboration “Q.U.E.E.N.”  Head below for the full tracklist. More »

Prince Remixes Janelle Monae’s “Q.U.E.E.N.”: Listen

Prince is up to something this year. He’s done a handful of concerts and has been rolling out some exciting new material in recent months, but with typical misdirection and mystery. For his latest trick, the Purple One has remixed Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu‘s wonderful “Q.U.E.E.N.,” turning it into an ’80s-style funk number. (That undulating bass line certainly brings to mind Digital Underground‘s “The Humpty Dance.”)

The original song is off Monae’s forthcoming album The Electric Lady, and Prince is making a rare guest spot on one of the tracks. Hear his remix below. More »

Janelle Monae & Erykah Badu’s “Q.U.E.E.N.” Video: Watch Them Break Free

Her Majesties
It’s so good to have Janelle Monae back in our lives, isn’t it? We were already obsessed with “Q.U.E.E.N.,” Monae’s collaboration with Erykah Badu, and now The Electric Lady‘s lead single has gotten an equally enthralling video treatment. The tale begins in the Living Museum, “where legendary rebels throughout history have been frozen in suspended animation.” And — you guessed it — among those trapped are Janelle and her Wondaland crew and their “dangerous accomplice” Badoula Oblongata, banished for launching Project Q.U.E.E.N. back in the 21st Century.

It’s exactly the type of stylishly futuristic and playfully absurd aesthetic we’ve come to expect from Monae, and the dystopian intro perfectly sets the tone for the defiant and quirky jam that follows. More »

Janelle Monae Teases “Q.U.E.E.N.” Video With Erykah Badu: Watch

Janelle Monae Q.U.E.E.N. Teaser Video
Yes, we’re properly obsessed with Janelle Monae‘s recent single “Q.U.E.E.N.” (with assistance from Erykah Badu, of course), and the video is shaping up to be promising — even just based on the thirty seconds of footage that Monae premiered as a sort of teaser. Why, you ask? Because Monae is getting primped and pampered in a tuxedo by a host of handlers, and she’s the rare artist who actually has the charisma and stage presence to just stand there doing nothing and command your attention. The competition could never.    More »

Janelle Monae & Erykah Badu’s “Q.U.E.E.N.”: Listen To The Funky, Sassy New Song

Ooh! Let Them Eat Cake
Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand. Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Brandy and Monica. Britney and Madonna. Yes, the history of pop is full of dynamic pairings of the day’s current divas. And now it’s time to add another one to the heap, in the form of the funky, finger-poppin’ new jam “Q.U.E.E.N.”, a duet between Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu that serves as the first single off Monae’s upcoming LP The Electric Lady.

It’s a pretty epic track that contains layer after layer of sounds that are both referential (dig those obvious Marvin Gaye/What’s Going On-era strings during the rap bit) and original, and the song further asserts the fact that Monae and Badu are now, and always have been, ladies we can’t ignore.

Bow down to “Q.U.E.E.N.” below! More »

Erykah Badu Tells Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne To “Kiss My Glittery Ass” Over NSFW Video

Nicki Minaj‘s beef with Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg can take a back seat for now — there’s a new feud in town. Erykah Badu has lashed out at Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips for allowing an unfinished and unapproved version of their music video “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” appear online.

The band pulled down the extremely NSFW video almost immediately, and issued an apologetic statement. “The video… is unedited and unapproved. We, the Flaming Lips, accept full responsibility… it has outraged and upset a segment of fans and we apologize if we offended any viewers.” But the person it outraged and upset the most was Erykah Badu, who took to Twitter to express her anger.
