Pet Shop Boys Cover Bee Gees’ “I Started A Joke” As Robin Gibb Tribute: Listen

“Winner”, the lead single from Pet Shop Boys‘ upcoming album Elysium (out September 11), is officially released this week as a digital EP that contains three B-sides: “A Certain Je Ne Sais Quoi”, “The Way Through The Woods” and “I Started A Joke”. Vocalist Neil Tennant told PopJustice that “A Certain Je Ne Sais Quoi” was originally penned in 2007 with Kylie Minogue in mind, but the duo decided to keep the song for themselves.

Meanwhile, the UK pop legends’ official site noted last month that “I Started A Joke”, a Bee Gees cover, was recorded as a tribute to Robin Gibb, who passed away in May following a struggle with cancer. Hear all three additional tunes from the “Winner” EP (out in the US tomorrow on iTunes) below. More »

The singer will be laid to rest in June during a private service near his home in Thame, Oxfordshire, in England. Following that, Gibb will be honored with a public memorial at St Paul’s Cathedral in London in September.

Surprisingly, Robin Gibb’s son Robert-John told UK paper The Sunday Express that kidney failure had been the cause of his father’s death, not cancer, as has been widely reported. More »

While the singer has yet to publicly comment on the passing of his younger brother, he posted a moving tribute video on YouTube, set to the tune of Bee Gees song “Heart Like Mine”.

Bee Gee Robin Gibb Awakens From Coma

Here’s some happy news from the music world — Bees Gees‘ Robin Gibb has awakened from his coma and is reportedly in better health. The 62-year-old caught pneumonia following some intensive chemotherapy to treat his colorectal cancer and fell into a coma last weekend, from which his doctors weren’t sure he’d recover. Fortunately, Gibb is now awake and able to communicate with family members, though still dependent on an oxygen mask and feeding tubes. Leave it to a Bee Gee to keep on “Stayin’ Alive.” [Spinner]
