Let’s just take a moment to acknowledge the fact that Adam Lambert truly is a rock star. Sure, he had the rock and roll swagger down pat during his stint on American Idol five years (!!) ago, and he’s got the voice, he’s released albums and had hit singles, toured on his own and gotten his name into a few headlines — some of them probably unwanted, but, hey, that’s rock and roll too. But the man, now 32, spent a better part of this summer traveling the globe and fronting Queen on stage (seriously — think about that for a minute), filling the legendary shoes of Mr. Freddie Mercury. If you didn’t believe it before, you should definitely know it by now: Adam Lambert is a fucking rock star.
So here we now have a new interview with Adam, where he’s looking pretty suave in the studio with Ryan Seacrest. (Watch it above.) The important takeaways here: He’s signed a new label deal after parting ways with RCA, and he’s working on his third album with “an amazing executive producer.” More »
While the future of reality competition shows remains uncertain, American Idol
will return with the same talent from Season 13.
The show is bringing back Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr. for its judging panel, along with host Ryan Seacrest. “Their interaction, warmth and experience made them an absolute joy to watch. I can’t wait to see their evolution together continue next season,” Simon Fuller, Idol‘s creator and executive producer, said in a statement.
Next season will not be the last, according to Fox chief Kevin Reilly. However, Idol will be pared down significantly, from 50-plus hours to a neat 37 – an answer to the show’s faltering ratings. Last season’s performance finale drew just 6.6 million viewers, making for the least-watched episode in the show’s history, including at its infancy with Kelly Clarkson facing off Justin Guarini. By now, you’ve surely read the news that Asheville, North Carolina, native Caleb Johnson was crowned winner
of American Idol
‘s 13th season. The top two finalists, Caleb and Jena Irene
, had a good, old-fashioned sing-off Tuesday night
with the results of America’s final vote announced last night (May 21).
In addition to learning the identity of the winner, the episode was packed with songs from guest performers including Jennifer Nettles, Phillip Phillips, Kiss, Aloe Blacc, Demi Lovato, Paramore, John Legend, Jason Mraz, Richard Marx, Darius Rucker and Lady Antebellum. Not to be left out, judges Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban also got on stage to perform together. Former host and mentor, Randy Jackson also joined in on the fun. Heck, host Ryan Seacrest even did his best to sing a tune. More »
The buildup of an entire season has led us all to this week, with the remaining two contestants, Caleb Johnson
and Jena Irene
duking it out in a final round of songs live from Los Angeles. On Tuesday night (May 20), each kid is tasked with singing three songs. The first is a selection from American Idol
creator Simon Fuller
. The second is the contestant’s choice, with Jena and Caleb selecting their favorite song from a previous performance.
For the occasion, host Ryan Seacrest is decked out in a white tuxedo jacket, black bow tie and pants. The two finalists emerge onto the stage, each looking very much like rock stars. The judges, not to be outdone, are also looking fabulous with Jennifer Lopez in a leather and sparkle dress and her hair done up like Brigitte Bardot in her heyday. Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. are looking fancy in jackets and big smiles.
We get a flashback clip of Jena asking Caleb to prom. This prompts Idol to film a throwback prom vignette. Despite myself, I find it quite cute. I hope they actually do go to prom together. More »
This was the second to last week of American Idol
, with next week’s finale scheduled to take place at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Wednesday night
, the top three contestants, Jena Irene, Caleb Johnson and Alex Preston, sang three different songs in the hopes to earn a final shot at the grand title. Thursday evening (May 15), all of America learned the identity of the final two singers remaining, and we were treated to a performance from Season 10 winner, Scotty McCreery
To open the show, host, Ryan Seacrest enters the stage with his new beautiful, black puppy named Georgia, whom he quickly passes off to a handler off stage. The top three contestants look pained as they sit in the lounge waiting for the results show to commence. Our beloved judges arrive, Keith Urban looking rock and roll in his signature leather jacket, t-shirt and jeans. Harry Connick Jr.‘s all dressed up in a suit and Jennifer Lopez is a bedazzled dream in a tight-fitting Pucci dress and a braided updo. More »
has been unusually quiet on the music front since “Slow Down”
was sent to radio in August 2013. The shimmery pop perfection that is Stars Dance
never got a third single despite selling well and rumors began to swirl that the 21-year-old was shopping for new management and even a new label. (The former turned out to be true, there’s still no word on the latter).
Given all these developments, fans were happily surprised when Ryan Seacrest revealed that Sel has a new song/video on the way in a recent radio segment about Kim Kardashian‘s wedding. “I saw Selena the other night and she’s got a big new song coming out and a really cool video,” he said. But here’s where it gets really interesting. “The video will get people talking about whether or not it’s about she and Justin [Bieber]”.
Could this be a belated Stars Dance single or the lead single from Selena’s next LP? Ryan doesn’t mention Justin singing on the song, so it’s probably not their long hoped-for duet. Listen to the radio mogul spill the beans about the diva’s next move after the jump. He starts talking about Sel at the 2:35 minute mark. More »
After bidding a tearful farewell
(on my part at least) to Malaya Watson, only seven contestants are left. And since Malaya was clearly my favorite, I’m struggling to figure out who of the remaining finalists deserve my love and support. This week’s theme is Competitor’s Pick, meaning that the kiddos have to select their song choice for the evening from a list compiled by their fellow six competitors. And, there are some super random guest appearances from the likes of Demi Lovato
and Terry Bradshaw

Wednesday (April 8) evening, the American Idol
contestants took a journey back in time to sing songs from the 1980s
. Sam Woolf previously received a one-time-only reprieve from the judges who decidedly unanimously to keep him in the competition and use their single save. However, that also meant that someone definitely had to go home on results night, as there is no longer a safety net. And if you’ve been reading my recaps, you’ll know I’m not a happy camper. More »
is jogging your musical memory this week. The theme for the Wednesday (March 19) performances is “Top 10,” in keeping with the number of remaining contestants and also the 10 songs from 2011 until today they’re tasked with performing. Probably for the first time this season, we see the judges so divided about their opinions that they squabble politely until they practically run out of time. More »
In American Idol
‘s first ever “Rush Week,” the top 15 ladies are whittled down to the top ten in a one fell swoop, leaving five unfortunate women to pack their bags and their dreams and head home. Each of the top ten contestants are called to the stage, one by one, learning only when their name is called that they are still in the running for the competition. And Wednesday evening, it will be the men who go through the same rigamarole. Additionally, now that the votes have been calculated, Idol
will reveal the identity of the last of the top 15 men after leaving us with the cliffhanger between Neco Starr and Ben Briley from last week
But first, time for singing! More »
