Selena Gomez upstaged everyone at the American Music Awards with her emotional rendition of “The Heart Wants What It Wants.” The 22-year-old fought back tears throughout the incredible performance, which clearly struck a chord with viewers. The diva’s final single for Hollywood Records — she is now officially an Interscope artist — shot into the iTunes top five and shortly thereafter became her second top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
The former teen queen, who may or may not be collaborating with Iggy Azalea, now opens up about the epic TV moment in an emotional video diary. “This performance is a little bit frightening,” she admits. “When I had the intention behind the performance I knew that I wanted it to be all of me.” Selena then gets super real. “Somebody asked me a while ago, ‘what’s the one thing you wish people knew about you?’ and I said I wanted it to be my heart.” Watch up top. Truly great albums were hard to come by in 2014, but the land of pop music was flooded with amazing singles over the past 12 months. In fact, we had a field day re-visiting the sounds of this year in order to compile this list, which you’ll find is filled with everything from synthed-up R&B jams to housey club cuts to twangy guitar pop to sassy rap joints.
So let’s just hop to it. Below you’ll find Idolator’s roundup of the 20 Best Pop Singles Of 2014. (Also, if you didn’t already check out our list of the Best Albums Of 2014, it serves as a nice companion piece!) We’ve even thrown in a handy Spotify playlist featuring each track — well, except for the Beyonce one, which we had to substitute with a dodgy, generic “as made famous by” cover version. Enjoy! Selena Gomez has been in transition for the majority of 2014. She found new management and returned to the studio with producers in crime Dreamlab and Ruffian (plus new collaborator Zedd). Then the singer released the Justin Bieber-inspired torch song, “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” as a single from her new greatest hits compilation For You. All of this seemed to confirm what rumors have suggested for a few months now — Gomez was ready to leave her Disney Channel days behind, by fulfilling her contract at the Disney-owned Hollywood Records and signing to Interscope, making for an eventful 2015.
On December 12, the Stars Dance diva confirmed the good news: She’s now an Interscope artist! Gomez posted to Instagram a snapshot at a restaurant, with what appears to be the record contract in front of her — see it below. More »
Selena Gomez confirmed what we already knew when she admitted that new single “The Heart Wants What It Wants” is about ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber. “I definitely have so much respect and love for him, and going in the studio is just very therapeutic,” the 22-year-old said in a Norwegian radio interview. “[The song] was my way of having it be a message more to people in general. People everywhere feel this feeling, and they should understand when anybody goes through that.”
The “Slow Down” diva, who is already hard at work on her next album, confirmed that she’s not dating anyone and certainly hasn’t signed up for any hook-up apps. “[I don't] even know how to work [Tinder],” she joked. As for Justin’s platinum-blond makeover? “That’s for him. I’ll let him answer all that.” Selena sounds like she’s in a really good place. With a new album, movies and a rumored TV show on the way, 2015 should be her biggest year yet. Listen to the interview after the jump. More »
Iggy Azalea set tongues wagging when she randomly admitted to hitting the studio with Britney Spears in November. She didn’t give any further details but social media soon started buzzing with fake track titles (“Bliss” being the most common). The femcee finally shed more light on the tantalizing collaboration yesterday (December 10), when she responded to a fan on Twitter. “To answer ur question: bliss isn’t real or the name of our song. also our song isn’t about booty or sonically similar.”
Obviously in a chatty mood, the multiple-Grammy nominee also confirmed that the next single from Reclassified is Jennifer Hudson-assisted bop “Trouble,” which is a blow for those of us hoping to hear “Heavy Crown” on the radio. The reason? Radio formats and audience testing. “['Heavy Crown' is] not formatted for pop or rhythmic radio and i would lose two formats of airplay,” Iggy explained. “People need to realize they ‘test’ the songs w ppl and give them scores. thats how it works, they pick based on what scores.”
And if that isn’t enough I-G-G-Y news for one day, the “Beg For It” hitmaker also followed Selena Gomez on Instagram this morning — prompting speculation that she’s working on the former teen queen’s Interscope debut. See Iggy’s Twitter spree after the jump. More »
Selena Gomez isn’t wasting any time recording tracks for her first album with Interscope. The 22-year-old just wound up her seven-year stint with Hollywood Records by releasing greatest hits compilation For You, which spawned monster hit “The Heart Wants What It Wants”. (The teary break-up anthem is currently sitting at number six on the Billboard Hot 100). She’s clearly hoping to build on that momentum by getting new music out sooner rather than later.
The “Come & Get It” hitmaker already revealed that she’s going to spend the next four months working on her Interscope debut, but she remained silent about her potential collaborators until last week when she posted a pic in the studio with Dreamlab and Ruffian. The former production duo have a long history with Sel (they worked on “Hit The Lights”, “Like A Champion” and “Write Your Name”) but the other cook in the kitchen is usually associated with indie-pop acts and DJs. More excitingly, Ruffian recently posted a pic in the studio with Zedd. Could they be cooking up a hit for Selena? See the pics after the jump. More »
Selena Gomez is leaving Hollywood Records on a high note. “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” the 22-year-old’s final single for the label, is shaping up to be her biggest hit yet. After stealing the show at the recent American Music Awards with a gut-wrenching performance, the break-up anthem exploded on iTunes and subsequently jumped to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 — equalling the peak of 2013 smash “Come & Get It.”
The next step on Sel’s journey to total chart domination is a batch of club-friendly dance remixes from the likes of DJ Kue, Cosmic Dawn and Ruff Loaderz. The producers all put a very different spin on “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” which means there’s something here for everyone. I wish there was an edgier house overhaul among them but, until one comes long, these will do nicely. Take a listen after the jump. More »
Taylor Swift remains the queen of the Billboard Hot 100 with “Blank Space” logging its third week at #1. As if the 1989 diva hasn’t made enough chart history lately, her latest smash is the first single since Pharrell‘s “Happy” to sell more than 300,000 copies for three straight weeks. The man with the hat managed the feat for seven consecutive weeks, so she still has some way to go before beating that.
The rest of the top five remains largely static but there’s more action further down the chart. For starters, Selena Gomez soars from #20 to #6 with “The Heart Wants What It Wants”. That makes heartstring-tugging ballad her equal highest charting single. (“Come & Get It” peaked at #6 in 2013.) The only other new entry in the Top 10 is Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars‘ retro-tastic “Uptown Funk”. It lands at an impressive #8. See the full Top 10 after the jump. More »
The heart wants what it wants — and in the case of Stars Dance darling Selena Gomez, the heart really wants to be near a microphone.
SelGo got our hearts racing (and our eyes tearing) with her stunning performance of “The Heart Wants What It Wants” on the 2014 American Music Awards, and it seems she’s already well on her way to recording her Interscope Records debut following the release of her Hollywood Records greatest hits collection, For You.
In an Instagram posted yesterday, the “Love You Like A Love Song” cutie was pictured standing with a microphone, poised to sing (see above). “What the next 4 months will look like. -Even in my hotel rooms. You guys, I’m beyond excited for what’s next. #2015,” she wrote. Yay! All work, no play for Miss Gomez, it seems — 2015 is going to be a great year to be a Selenator. More »
