Iggy Azalea And Charli XCX’s “Fancy” Crowned Song Of Summer 2014 By Idolator Readers

Did you feel the sudden tilt that happened and notice the sun stayed out longer than it has all year on Saturday? That’s because this weekend brought with it the first official day of summer. (We hope you took advantage of it, because the sunlight will start dwindling a minute a day during the inevitable slide toward winter. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and start with the sum-sum-summertime sadness already!)

This all means it’s time for us to tally up the results of our 2014 Song Of The Summer poll. There were seven strong contenders vying for the title this year: Ariana Grande‘s “Problem,” Iggy Azalea‘s “Fancy,” MAGIC!‘s “Rude,” Nico & Vinz‘s “Am I Wrong,” Jason Derulo‘s “Wiggle,” Calvin Harris“Summer” and Ed Sheeran‘s “Sing.” Alas, there can only be one official champion, and, per our readers, that is I-G-G-Y’s Charli XCX-featuring “Fancy.”

Votes for all seven songs shot up into the thousands, with “Fancy,” the inescapable radio jam that’s been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the past four weeks, being the clear-cut winner after capturing just over 28% of the clicks. Head below to see how the rest of the poll played out. More »

Who Has 2014′s Song Of The Summer? Vote All Week In Our Poll

We say this every single year, but somehow we blinked and — BAM! — spring came and went. This is the final week of the season, and with June 21 (i.e. the first official day of summer) just around the corner, it’s time to get voting underway for what you, dear pop fanatics, think will be 2014′s official Song Of The Summer.

Over the past week and a half, we rolled out seven strong contenders for the title: Ariana Grande‘s “Problem,” Iggy Azalea‘s “Fancy,” MAGIC!‘s “Rude,” Nico & Vinz‘s “Am I Wrong,” Jason Derulo‘s “Wiggle,” Calvin Harris“Summer” and Ed Sheeran‘s “Sing.” (And, yes — we’re totally side-eyeing Mr. Nico and Mr. Vinz for guffing up what would have been a perfect slate of single-word titles!) With each writeup, we detailed the individual song’s ascent into the mainstream and the reasons we feel any of them might just still be ruling the airwaves well into August.

But now it’s time to let democracy take the wheel and turn all seven picks over to you. There can only ever be one smash hit that’s crowned Song Of The Summer. So head below and get to voting, then check back on the site this Friday to see who Idolator readers deem worthy of winning the official SOS title! More »

Will Ed Sheeran’s “Sing” Be 2014′s Song Of The Summer?

Slip on your shades, grab a glass of lemonade and check back each weekday over the next week and a half as we present you each Song Of The Summer contender.

By now, everyone’s heard of Ed Sheeran. Or, at least, they should have. After releasing his ridiculously successful debut album, +, in 2011, winning two BRIT Awards for Best British Male and British Breakthrough Act in 2012, and collaborating with music heavyweights such as Taylor Swift, One Direction and Sir Elton John, it is an understatement to say that the guy has been on fire as of late (and it’s not because of bright red hair either). Thus, choosing Sheeran’s latest single “Sing” as our seventh and final Song of the Summer contestant felt like an absolute no-brainer.

Featured on his highly anticipated upcoming sophomore attempt, x, “Sing” definitely does not resemble Ed’s signature languid melodies and crooning mewl. Done in collaboration with the King Midas of Music Pharrell Williams, the track seems to have a bit of a Justin Timberlake influence with it’s upbeat guitar riffs and Sheeran’s flawless falsetto. No doubt, the song shows a different side of Ed who is, simply put, out on the prowl and just having a good time. More »

Will Calvin Harris’ “Summer” Be 2014′s Song Of The Summer?

Slip on your shades, grab a glass of lemonade and check back each weekday over the next week and a half as we present you each Song Of The Summer contender.

The next contender in our competition has mastered the art of creating perfect summer smashes! Ever since his debut with 2007′s I Created Disco LP, Calvin Harris has been steadily churning dance-worthy hits like nobody’s business. His latest single from his upcoming album, “Summer” (could the title be any more fitting?) encapsulates everything we’ve come to love from the DJ/producer: Soothing vocals (courtesy of Harris himself), infectious synths and an all-around vibrancy that is bound to keep your feet moving all through the warm months ahead.

Calvin Harris’ popularity escalates higher and higher with each passing year, and it’s fun to watch. No one can deny the impact of Rihanna‘s 2011 mega-hit “We Found Love,” which propelled the Scottish producer to international stardom. His recent festival favorites include his collaboration with Ne-Yo for “Let’s Go,” “I Need Your Love” featuring Ellie Goulding, “Thinking About You” with Ayah Marar, “Sweet Nothing” with Florence Welch and, arguably the biggest one of all, the career-boosting “Feel So Close.” Oh, did we mention these tunes all come from 18 Months, Harris’ third studio album? How impressive is that? More »

Will Jason Derulo’s “Wiggle” Be 2014′s Song Of The Summer?

Slip on your shades, grab a glass of lemonade and check back each weekday over the next week and a half as we present you each Song Of The Summer contender.

There is no doubt that the contenders in our Song Of The Summer competition are incredibly catchy, but this entry takes it to the next level! After releasing a list of hits over the past five years, Jason Derulo is back again to take on the summer months with his party anthem “Wiggle.” From award show performances to viral videos, the latest single from the R&B singer has sparked a fire that puts everyone in the dancing mood.

Jason Derulo is no stranger to to the Pop and R&B worlds, as he made his debut with his eponymous album in 2010. Since then, he has dropped a few gems here and there, but they never made an impressive impact (compared to his competitors Chris Brown and Ne-Yo) until recently. 2014 is shaping up to be the year that Derulo conquers all! Will Nico & Vinz’s “Am I Wrong” Be 2014′s Song Of The Summer?

Slip on your shades, grab a glass of lemonade and check back each weekday over the next week and a half as we present you each Song Of The Summer contender.

If you’re an avid follower of Idolator, then it should come as no surprise that we have a soft spot for European musicians. Our latest favorite hails from Norway, whose current international smash we cannot seem to get out of our heads. Newcomers Nico & Vinz may have just made their debut stateside, but they quickly made an impact on the airwaves — and just in time for our Song Of The Summer competition!

The pop duo (comprised of Nico Sereba and Vincent Dery) have already made a name for themselves in Europe. They’re now gaining more buzz in North America thanks to the breezy “Am I Wrong off their upcoming sophomore album Black Star Elephant. Like their fellow contenders MAGIC!, it took a little while for them to receive widespread media attention. But don’t be fooled; with this new song, Nico & Vinz are definitely up for the challenge of owning the summer. More »

Will MAGIC!’s “Rude” Be 2014′s Song Of The Summer?

Slip on your shades, grab a glass of lemonade and check back each weekday over the next week and a half as we present you each Song Of The Summer contender.

Following our closer looks at Ariana Grande‘s “Problem” and Iggy Azalea‘s “Fancy,” this next contender for our Song of the Summer series goes to show that you don’t need a big name to have a big hit! Despite popping up on our music radar just a few months ago, Canadian band MAGIC!‘s breakthrough single “Rude” has a strong possibility of dominating the summer season.

The band (composed of four members, including well-known songwriter and producer Nasri who has worked with Justin Bieber, Iggy Azalea and Chris Brown) made their international debut back in January, and the feel-good single off their recently announced debut LP Don’t Kill The Magic has been soaring on the charts and radio ever since. Will Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” Be 2014′s Song Of The Summer?

Slip on your shades, grab a glass of lemonade and check back each weekday over the next week and a half as we present you each Song Of The Summer contender.

The title for Song of the Summer may be an easy win for this next artist, who has TWO major songs ruling the radio airwaves and the Billboard charts! Iggy Azalea has been working overtime for the past few weeks promoting her feature on Ariana Grande‘s “Problem”  (read our SOS assessment on that one here) and, of course, her own fiery single “Fancy.”

Who would have ever predicted this Australian import would soon become the biggest pop star of 2014? Virtually a nobody just three years ago, Iggy Azalea jumped on our radar with her ultra-raunchy mixtape Ignorant Art. Yet after moniker confusions with a certain other female rapper, a questionable Southern-flavored drawl and bodacious model-like figure, we never expected for her to last this long. But since the start of 2014 she has proven all of us wrong! More »

Will Ariana Grande’s “Problem” Be 2014′s Song Of The Summer?

Slip on your shades, grab a glass of lemonade and check back each day over the next week and a half as we present you seven different Song Of The Summer contenders!

It’s that time of year again, pop fans, when every site devoted to pop culture will attempt to predict what the Song Of The Summer will be…before the summer season actually begins, naturally. Regarding last year, it’s safe to say that Robin Thicke‘s somewhat controversial sex jam “Blurred Lines” walked away with the title, while just two years ago it was Carly Rae Jepsen‘s “Call Me Maybe” that blew up the airwaves all through the warmest months of 2012.

So here’s the deal: We here at Idolator are presenting one Song Of The Summer contender a day, then capping the roll-out off with a poll where you can vote on the one from the bunch that’s your favorite — only this time, we’re highlighting seven songs rather than the usual five. And with that now out of the way, let’s get on with it!

We’re starting the whole SOS shebang off this time around with Ariana Grande‘s sax-filled “Problem,” a raucous pop jam which, thanks to Iggy Azalea‘s current chart-topper “Fancy,” has been stuck in the runner-up position on the Billboard Hot 100 for the past two weeks. Ariana can’t have too many hard feelings though, since, of course, Iggy also features on “Problem.” More »

Song Of The Summer 2013: Idolator Readers Choose Avril Lavigne’s “Here’s To Never Growing Up”

Idolator readers have delivered quite the wedding present to Canadian songbird Avril Lavigne today: her single “Here’s To Never Growing Up” was voted the winner of our 2013 Song Of The Summer poll. Astoundingly, the defiant pop jam beat out the likes of Robin Thicke‘s smash “Blurred Lines,” Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky,” Mariah Carey and Miguel‘s “#Beautiful” and Miley Cyruscomeback single “We Can’t Stop” — oddly enough, all songs that have actually sold more and charted higher than “Here’s To Never Growing Up”on the Billboard Hot 100.

During the previous week, while voting was underway, rabid Lavigne devotees took to the poll’s comments section and spoke with deep conviction about why “Here’s To Never Growing Up” truly deserved to be crowned Song Of The Summer. Two of our favorites: “Avriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiill Lavigne” and “AVRIL LAVINGE AVRIL LAVINGE AVRIL LAVINGE AVRIL LAVINGE AVRIL LAVINGE AVRIL LAVINGE AVRIL LAVINGE AVRIL LAVINGE…”

And so, once again, the people have chosen. And Summer, you now have a new Song Of The. Head below to see how the voting for each of the five contenders panned out. More »
