we had our hearts occupied by Garbage, Aaliyah, and fun. and Janelle Monae’s “We Are Young.” This week, our Hype Index finds us all abuzz about a Playboy
cover, a would-be X Factor
host, and a certain American Idol
whose criminal behavior isn’t limited to being pitchy. Plus, as you may have guessed, we’re still pretty jazzed about South By Southwest.
To see who made our hearts go all a-flutter this week and who broke them, head below!
With South By Southwest right around the corner, we spent the majority of our week getting majorly pumped up for all the performers to hit Austin
— particularly those at our own Pray For Pop party
at the Pure Volume House. But SXSW aside, there were plenty more developments in pop to chronicle in our weekly Pop & Fizz
rankings. (Remember, we measure each artist or major news story according to their size, or “Rank”, and then we weigh how they’re faring overall in the pop zeitgeist, or “Hype”.) Head below to see who filled — and broke — our hearts this week. More »
We’re still recovering from SXSW 2011, but before we hang up our cowboy hats until next March, we want to thank everyone who Pray-ed For Pop
along with us in Austin and across the globe — specifically the fans who entered our postcard contest. Below are the personal notes to our five lucky winners from Crystal Bowersox
, Neon Hitch
, Oh Land and Eliza Doolittle
. Their sentiments are the same as ours: wish you were there! Thanks to everyone who entered, and we hope to see y’all down in Texas next year!
We told you we’d rally the pop faithful at our Pray For Pop party
at South By Southwest, and we did: R&B trailblazer Miguel
delivered a rapturous set that mixed sweaty funk with sultry balladry. The “Sure Thing”
singer brought his silky blend of soul, pop and rock to the stage — along with the baddest mic stand of the night. Jump below to watch Miguel make the crowd melt by performing tunes from his debut LP, All I Want Is You

When Kanye West rolls into South By Southwest and takes the stage at the Vevo Power Station this Saturday night at 11:59 p.m.
, he’ll be joined by a bunch of his G.O.O.D. Music family members — John Legend, Common, Kid Cudi, Pusha T, Mr. Hudson, Cyhi The Prynce, Big Sean, and Mos Def will also make appearances at the inevitably overcrowded show. If you can’t get in, don’t sweat it too much — the all-star performance will be broadcast on Vevo on April 22, which, of course, is Good Friday.
We’re headed to Texas, y’all! Idolator and BuzzMedia will be two-stepping to Austin later this month to join up with the music faithful at South By Southwest, Austin’s annual movie, music and tech fest. Idolator’s official Pray For Pop party goes down from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 17 at The PureVolume House on 5th and Trinity Street.
And what’s a party without some live music?
We’re tickled pink to announce the exciting and eclectic mix of artists on our lineup: Circus performer turned singer-songwriter Neon Hitch; quirky British songbird Eliza Doolittle; suave R&B crooner Miguel; lovely Danish electro-pop darling Oh Land; and American Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox (though she’s totally the winner of Season 9 in our book). And Infinity Spaceship will be providing live karaoke to all you pop star-wannabes.
If you’re 21+ and want to party with other pop-minded music fans, RSVP over at The PureVolume House. Giddy up!
