Chris Brown And Trey Songz Pay Homage To R. Kelly On “Songs On 12 Play”: Listen

Chris Brown teamed up with Trey Songz for “Songs On 12 Play,” a new song from Brown’s upcoming sixth album X (out September 16).

The match-up isn’t just arousing mood music, as to be expected from two young R&B stars. Instead, Brown and Songz weave in references to R. Kelly‘s singles off 1993 debut 12 Play (“Sex Me,” “Bump ‘N Grind,” “Your Body’s Callin’”), plus later hits like “Fiesta” and “Ignition,” in efforts to sound more explicitly adult.

If anything, “Songs On 12 Play” brings to mind how much Brown and Songz (who recently released his own sixth album, Trigga) owe to the still-controversial R. Kelly. Following a brief, almost forgettable stint with new jack swing, the raunchy R&B singer still manages to find new ways to surprise with his dreamy songs of explicit bedroom instructions, from sung-rapped vocals to truly outlandish metaphors.

Neither Brown nor Songz sound as impassioned in their tribute as R. Kelly would on his own, though “Songz On 12 Play” still sounds like an earnest effort. Hear the X song below. More »

:: Weird Al Yankovic completes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with a usual dosage of flare and nominates Barack Obama, the Dalai Llama and the Pope to be next in line. [Stereogum]

:: Round Hill Music won an auction for “Collide” crooner Howie Day‘s publishing catalog due to the singer’s recent bankruptcy. [Billboard]

Trey Songz Tops Album Chart While Ed Sheeran & Sam Smith Hang Tight Right Behind

Hats (And Shirts) Off!
This summer’s British upstarts Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith aren’t letting go of the upper reaches of the Billboard 200 anytime soon, as they hang in at #2 and #3, respectively, with x (which sold another 53,000 copies) and In The Lonely Hour (45,000). Sheeran topped the album chart last week, but makes way this time around for the #1 debut of “Na Na” crooner Trey Songz‘s sixth album Trigga (105,000).

Amidst all the shuffling within the Top 10, “Rude” dudes MAGIC! debut at #6 with their debut LP Don’t Kill The Magic (36,000), while Robin Thicke‘s public lament Paula creeps in at #9 with 24,000 sold, a far cry from the 177,000 Blurred Lines opened with last summer.

Trey Songz’s ‘Trigga’: Stream The Full Album Featuring Justin Bieber And Nicki Minaj

Trey Songz has claimed (convincingly) that he invented sex. In his new album Trigga, now streaming ahead of its July 1 release, the young R&B crooner’s behavior tends to be just as bold. He and Juicy J pal up in the Mike WiLL Made It-produced “Late Night” to lay down one-night-stand terms as explicitly as possible. Following 2010′s “Bottoms Up,” he reunites with Nicki Minaj – a last-minute feature – in “Touchin’, Lovin’,” for a woozy pop-R&B number that inspires them to lay down an important ground rule for bedroom behavior – in the words of the Pink Print star, “Real n—-s let real b—–s come first.” And he and Justin Bieber fantasize of a Miami vacation in his “Foreign” remix, complete with a short and succinct list of priorities: F—, drink, sleep.

Songz would repeat that sentiment later on, just as he features not one, but two version of “Foreign” in the album’s standard edition – moves that seems a bit excessive. But the somewhat long wait for the tender “SmartPhones,” dubious title and all, is worth it. There he imagines being caught cheating, and as he attempts to figure out how to beg for an apology, his anguished voice coasts into a falsetto with little to no effort. For all the times he’s sing-rapping and being blunt in Trigga, it’s stunning to hear him meander and sigh of being speechless.

Trey Songz Nabbed “Incredible” Justin Bieber Collab For New Album ‘Trigga’

Trey Songz will release his sixth album, Trigga, on July 1. Among other collaborations, the studio effort features a collaboration with Justin Bieber. “It’s incredible,” he said to MTV.

Songz had released the woozy strip club anthem “Foreign” on May 13, as a teaser for Trigga. Soon after that, Bieber called Songz for a collaboration, resulting in a “Foreign” remix. “I’m elated for people to hear how he sounds on it, because the first reaction I get from a lot of people is, ‘Who is that?’ Like, who is that?’” Songz says. “Because you don’t expect him to be on a record like that, and he snapped.”

Trigga will also feature Houston rap stalwart Juicy J, plus rising R&B singers Ty Dolla $ign (“Paranoid”) and Mila J (“Smoke, Drink, Break-Up”). (Fun fact: Mila J is also Jhene Aiko‘s sister.) See the Trigga tracklist and hear Songz’s original “Foreign”below. More »

50 Cent’s ‘Animal Ambition’: Album Review

During HOT 97′s Summer Jam on June 1, 50 Cent surprised the crowd by hugging former rival Nas, then bringing out his long-dissipated crew G-Unit — their first performance together since 2008. One at a time, as if going to bat, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo and Young Buck walked out to rap a memorable hook from G-Unit’s rap- (and pop)-ruling heyday in the early 2000s.

“The Unit is back,” one member said, in an attempt to sweep their public beef under the rug. (“50 ain’t rocking with me and Banks,” Yayo said. 50 claims that he gave all he possibly could.) But even during the brief hits medley (and compared to the crew’s new song released the next day, “Nah I’m Talking ‘Bout”), G-Unit’s performance didn’t feel quite like a reunion. Instead, 50 Cent’s voice boomed over everyone else’s, proving he was still in fighting shape despite not having released an album in five years.

Unfortunately, 50 Cent isn’t as authoritative in his comeback record, Animal Ambition (out today, ), as he could be. More »
