Ariana Grande’s “Problem” Was Almost A Collab With Ying Yang Twins

Ariana Grande‘s “Problem” started as a mere whisper. “I don’t remember where I came up with it,” Savan Kotetcha, the song’s co-writer, said to Rolling Stone. “Maybe in an airplane bathroom. On my phone I have an audio note where I whisper, ‘One less problem.’” Thanks to that audio note, “Problem” was almost a collaboration with Ying Yang Twins.

Kotecha, also Max Martin‘s protege and a lead producer for Grande’s next album, says that the song’s working title was “The Whisper Song,” as inspired by the Atlanta crunk duo’s 2005 hit “Wait (The Whisper Song).” Grande’s manager Scooter Braun then decided to get the Ying Yang Twins into the studio. “Scooter was obsessed with bringing in the Ying Yang Twins,” says Wendy Goldstein, Grande’s A&R rep at Republic Records. “We had them try, but they just flopped it. They couldn’t get it together.” More »

Twerk Godfathers Ying Yang Twins Offer The Final Word On The Miley Cyrus Issue

In song and on record, Jay Z cheekily approved of Miley Cyrusnewfound appreciation of twerking, while other corners of the Internet were more skeptical or confused about the former Disney star’s sudden, public embrace of this new hobby. But now we have the final word on the issue! Ying Yang Twins — the godfathers of twerk responsible for booty-shaking early aughts songs like “Whistle While You Twurk” and “Salt Shaker” — have weighed in. And they’re totally cool with Miley’s twerkitude. (In fact, they have a new song named after her.)

Speaking to the Village Voice, Ying Yang member D-Roc said, “She wants that to be her image[...] She can be Miley Cyrus, she can be Hannah Montana, she can be whoever the fuck she wants to be.” He added, “She’s someone you never would think would twerk, so now that she is, do the Miley Cyrus with it. Because she isn’t the first white girl to start twerking.” More »

Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” Remixed By Ying Yang Twins: Listen

Since many people’s first-listen reactions to Justin Bieber‘s single “Boyfriend” included comparisons to the Ying Yang Twins (specifically their 2005 track “Wait (The Whisper Song)”), it makes sense that the rap duo would make their own remix of the song. Well, not complete sense, apparently: “Ying Yang… and Justin Bieber?” questions the first line of the remix, sounding dubious that such a collaboration could exist. And yet it does! Check it out below.

Ying Yang Twins & Greg Tecoz Tell You Exactly How To Dance To New Single “Fist Pump, Jump! Jump!”

Before we heard the full track, there were rumors that Justin Bieber was channeling Ying Yang Twins on his new single “Boyfriend,” reminding us: whatever happened to those guys? Turns out the crunk duo was readying the first single from their 2012 album All Around the World, “Fist Pump, Jump! Jump!”, featuring Greg Tecoz. “We got a whole lot of ladies and a whole of fellas / When you put them all together, they be ready for whatever,” the Twins growl over a RedOne-produced track that is both quite catchy and derivative of more songs than we can put our finger on (perhaps most notably, Van Halen’s “Jump,” with all that 80′s synth — not to mention the jumping).
