Nelly Furtado Drops "Islands Of Me"
Nelly Furtado surprised fans with super pop new single "Islands Of Me." Listen.

Drake and Rihanna’s “Too Good” has been covered by everyone from LÉON to Zara Larsson, but nobody has really managed to make it their own apart from Nelly Furtado. The pop veteran casually threw her interpretation on Spotify last night (October 13) and it’s every bit as lovely as her acoustic take on Calvin Harris’ “Feels So Close.” She extracts the melody with the skill of a surgeon and taps into the well of melancholy that lies beneath the song. It’s another reminder that the Canadian is in the middle of a creative revival.

Nelly debuted the first taste of her sixth LP, The Ride, last month (sparkling synth-pop anthem “Islands Of Me”) and opened up about her new, “modern pop-alternative” sound in an interview with i-D. What does that mean? “I write pop melodies, I’ve always written pop melodies,” she explains. “But [producer John Congleton] forces me to dig a little deeper and make sure that I’m coming correct with the lyrics. I was also in a really cool phase in my life where I was going through a difficult time of transition and that helped lyrically. I just had so much to write about.” The “Say It Right” diva also revealed that the album will drop in March, 2017.

While we wait for that to arrive, soothe your ears with Nelly’s latest acoustic cover below.
