The Chainsmokers x Jhene Aiko
Jhene Aiko proves to be a much-needed presence in the otherwise generic "Wake Up Alone."

The Chainsmokers may have a reputation for being hard-partying EDM dudes. But the duo was nothing but overly polite during its Saturday Night Live debut last night (April 8).

Bless “Paris” guest vocalist Emily Warren, whose inviting voice made the prospect of running away (“Let’s show them we are better”) actually seem worthwhile. Aside from that, however, nothing about the Chainsmokers’ live set hit hard enough: Not the lyrics about toxic relationships, which only come across as vengeful on paper. Not singer Andrew Taggart‘s monotone voice, which could barely be heard above the mix. Not even that stunt during “Break Up Every Night,” where he climbed and perched on his bass drum, could add any excitement to songs that, presumably, will have festival-goers in sing-along mode this summer.

The Chainsmokers just released its debut album Memories … Do Not Open, featuring Coldplay, Jhene Aiko and Florida Georgia Line. Watch the duo perform on SNL below.
