Miley Cyrus still knows how to cause controversy. Today (May 6) on Instagram, she attempted to explain why she dissed hip-hop — a genre that defined her Bangerz album era, making her out to be a new age Fergie — in her new Billboard cover story.

So, to be clear I respect ALL artists who speak their truth and appreciate ALL genres of music (country , pop , alternative …. but in this particular interview I was asked about rap) I have always and will continue to love and celebrate hip hop as I’ve collaborated with some of the very best! At this point in my life I am expanding personally/musically and gravitating more towards uplifting, conscious rap! As I get older I understand the effect music has on the world & Seeing where we are today I feel the younger generation needs to hear positive powerful lyrics!

In Billboard, Miley was discussing the pop-rock direction of her new single “Malibu,” and her newfound desire to appeal to conservatives and country fans. But she also said, “I also love that new Kendrick [Lamar] song [‘Humble‘]: ‘Show me somethin’ natural like ass with some stretch marks.’ I love that because it’s not ‘Come sit on my dick, suck on my cock.’ I can’t listen to that anymore. That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much ‘Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my cock’ — I am so not that.”

The backlash was justifiably swift. “DUH: Miley Cyrus wore hip hop culture like a costume. Abandoned it. Stereotypes it now,” said journalist Britt Julious. Others were quick to cite how she sang of Jay Z in “Party in the USA.” They remembered how she sexualized twerking, while exploiting black female bodies, at the MTV Video Music Awards. They remembered how she collaborated with rappers like Future and Juicy J, with Mike WiLL Made It and Pharrell being the defining producers of her Bangerz era.

Meanwhile, Miley makes the common interviewee complaint and says that her comments were taken out of context. See her Instagram post in full here.
