Kelly Rowland Returns With A Gritty Mantra Called “Kelly”

While most of us were stuffing our faces with turkey and pie, Kelly Rowland was hard at work. The beloved Destiny’s Child diva dropped a new banger on Thanksgiving night (November 22) and it’s a gritty, surprisingly autobiographical banger. “Kelly” finds the 37-year-old in full hip-hop mode as she flexes about her life over a staccato beat. “Kelly got class, Kelly got ass,” she declares. “Kelly’s got a man, Kelly pop tabs.” The song takes a couple of listens to fully process, but it’s an unexpectedly catchy introduction to the hitmaker’s long-overdue 5th album.

“A lot of my albums and songs have been slow, except for tracks like ‘Commander’ or ‘When Love Takes Over,'” the “Kisses Down Low” queen said in an interview with LENNY way back in 2017. “I said I wanted this record to be happy because we need that right now, more than ever. That’s where my heart is.” A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then, but “Kelly” is definitely uptempo… if not necessarily the feel-good moment of healing she promised. No doubt, weightier material is coming. In the meantime, get ready to nod your head and wish you had as many things as Kelly. Listen below.
