It’s little surprise that Charli XCX, the fast-rising British “dark pop” singer, has been playing some bigger stages lately — not least because she’s opening for Coldplay on the band’s recent North American dates. But it was a bit of a surprise, and a terrific one, to see her bring an arena-scale energy to Hollywood’s compact Troubadour club this weekend, when she delivered a set that felt like a cardio workout as imagined by Joy Division.
Clad in a neon yellow Nike sports bra and leopard-print leggings under a see-through dress, Charli bounced and spun through an aerobic performance of songs from her fantastic Heartbreaks And Earthquakes mixtape and other recordings. To set up the mixtape track “Grins”, she announced what she deemed “a girl power spectacular”, inviting her friend and V magazine cover mate Sky Ferreira to the stage. Charli followed up with a fiery performance of her own “You’re The One” before closing the set.
