One Direction fans were shocked to see a video of Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson allegedly smoking pot that recently surfaced online, via the Daily Mail. Some tore up their One Direction concert tickets and one Directioner set her ticket on fire, while others cried of their ovaries exploding. But the tabloid coverage has been harsh, to the point where Liam Payne finally spoke up.

Payne was responding in particular to Daily Mail columnist Jan Moir, who saw the video as proof that One Direction was taking advantage of its devoted fanbase. She accused the group of “hav[ing] done very little to improve their musicianship, to learn a musical instrument or even write a song,” making their weed-fueled antics even more offensive to her.

It was her critique on One Direction’s music that set Payne off, resulting in a swift take-down of her accusations and sincere apology to  fans regarding the “joint” video (“I love my boys and maybe things have gone a little sideways I apologise for that”).
