The 2015 Video Music Awards Score Lowest Ratings In MTV History
The 2015 MTV Video Music Awards may have included a Nicki Minaj vs. Miley Cyrus psuedo-beef, The Weeknd spinning in flames for his performance, Justin Bieber having a mini-breakdown and Kanye West announcing his presidential run for 2020 — but that was not enough to draw in viewership!
According to a Nielsen report, 5.03 million viewers tuned into the awards show — which is 39 percent less than last year’s 8.26 million. If that was not enough, it is now the least-watched VMAs in MTV history.
The lowest-viewed show was back in 1996 (Nielsen began tracking the event in 1994), with 5.07 million views. 2015’s rating marks the VMAs’ weakest viewership in 19 years — just three years younger than host Miley Cyrus. The good news is that it was the most tweeted about non-sports program (21.4 million tweets to be exact) since Nielsen began tracking the the stat.
