ALMA’s ‘Heavy Rules’ Mixtape Is Jam-Packed With Bangers
ALMA already has a fierce track record of delivering bops as streaming hits “Dye My Hair,” “Chasing Highs” and “Phases” attest. However, the Finnish pop star really shows out on Heavy Rules — an absurdly good mixtape brimming with bangers. The six-song set begins with “Legend,” a boozy party anthem with bone-rattling beats and a little electric guitar. The good times continues with the MØ-assisted “Dance For Me,” which finds the neon-haired diva in a sexier mood. It’s one of three killer collaborations on the EP.
The next one, “Good Vibes,” is my favorite. ALMA and Tove Styrke come together for a bittersweet dance-pop moment about wanting one last shot of affection before a breakup. “Fake Gucci,” on the other hand, is the sweetest love song you’ll hear this week. “If you want want some luxury there is not much I can give but fake Gucci and my love,” she coos on the catchy chorus. “BACK2U” is similarly romantic, showing a softer side of the Finn. In it, she sings about not wanting to make it so she can get back to her lover.
That leaves us with “Chit Chat,” ALMA’s ferocious collaboration with Kiiara. This is every bit as mouthy and fun as you would expect from this pairing. Heavy Rules is the first great collection of pop songs to arrive in 2018. It goes hard from the opening track and maintains that quality and energy until the final beat. Stream it below.
