Melanie Teases Sophomore LP, 'K-12'
Melanie Martinez teases her long-awaited sophomore LP in a series of quirky videos.

Melanie Martinez has spent four years tinkering away at her sophomore LP, but the 24-year-old is making up for lost time by sharing snippets of every song on the album. The latest taste of K-12 (due September 6) to arrive is called “Show & Tell” and it’s a typically quirky piece of alt-pop that works on multiple levels. “Why is it so hard to see? If I cut myself I would bleed,” the “Pity Party” hitmaker sings. “I’m just like you, you’re like me. Imperfect and human are we.”

The snippet of “Show & Tell” (below) arrives a couple of days after a preview of “Teacher’s Pet” (bottom of post), which finds Melanie’s pen at its most withering. “She’s feeling like a spider in a cage, you liar,” she hisses. “You were her desire, now she wants to light you on fire.” K-12 picks up where the visual artist’s platinum-selling debut left off. Only, a couple of years have passed and Melanie’s alter-ego, an unhinged toddler called Cry Baby, is now a teenager. And she’s still not particularly well-adjusted. This is shaping up to be one hell of an album.
