Beyonce and Jay Z‘s latest HBO special aired on September 20, just a week after it was taped during their final joint tour dates in Paris.
By now, the public already knows what to expect of Beyonce and Jay Z On the Run: How Beyonce essentially brought a routine that she perfected during her preceding Mrs.Carter Show World Tour, only now with her husband as the world’s most expensive hype man. How tweaked versions of lyrics addressed and sparked rumors of infidelity and pregnancy. How this tour’s premise was of these two stars imagining themselves as American outlaws – a blockbuster event more anticipated than any million-dollar film adaptation that Hollywood offered this summer.
But the larger point of watching On the Run isn’t to reckon with a new plot twist.
It’s to be dazzled by how expertly produced it all is: Their gritty fantasy played out on the venue’s large screens. That barre routine during “Naughty Girl.” Words from author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie‘s TED speech, flashing on the screen to cheers. Onikuhhhhhhhhhh. When Jay Z wraps his arms around Beyonce, right when she sings “Surfing all on this good good.” The hazier footage of the couple vacationing on yachts, then playing with Blue Ivy Carter – Beyonce’s expertly curated Tumblr come to life.

Beyonce and Jay Z are allegedly working on a joint LP. Yes, a whole album of collaborations like “Crazy In Love”, “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” and my current favorite “Part II (On The Run)”. The world isn’t ready! Dash Radio’s DJ Skee reported the news this afternoon (September 16) but didn’t cite his source, so it’s probably best to take the revelation with a grain of salt.
There is some precedent for it, however. Hov recorded Watch The Throne with Kanye West and Bey has been hinting at releasing more new music. She was rumored to be working on a sequel to her game-changing visual album but a joint project could be less stressful and take the weight of expectation off her shoulders. (Topping Beyonce is going to be tough). Listen to DJ Skee’s interview after the jump. More »
After capping off their highly successful, endlessly headline-generating On The Run Tour in Paris, Beyoncé and Jay Z are still finding new ways to bring their vision to fans, beginning with Part One of Bang Bang, a mini-film shot in support of their tour.
Today, the superstar duo debuted the first piece of the visual, directed by photographer/filmmaker Dikayl Rimmasch. Inspired by “French new wave cinema and the powerful intimacy of legendary independent director and mentor Les Blank,” the captivating clip sees the two hitting the dusty trail for some high-speed car rides (and a quick diner stop) in the vintage 2-minute clip — and yes, there’s an underlying meaning to this duo’s Bonnie & Clyde-esque styling. Thirty years ago, in 1984, the very first MTV Video Music Awards was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Actor/Blues Brother Dan Aykroyd
and actress-singer Bette Midler
gave her infamous “writhing around in a wedding dress” performance of “Like A Virgin,” The Cars
won Video Of The Year for “You Might Think” and David Bowie
and Cyndi Lauper
won Best Male Video (“China Girl”) and Best Female Video (“Girls Just Want To Have Fun”), respectively.
A lot has changed in that time, and he 31st annual VMAs was held at The Forum in Inglewood, California, just south of Los Angeles. Beyonce and Iggy Azalea were tied for the most nominations, with eight apiece, while Bey received the Video Vanguard Awards (an honor bestowed upon David Bowie, The Beatles and A Hard Day’s Night director Richard Lester at that very first ceremony in 1984).

Face it, kids: the MTV VMAs are hopelessly out of touch. I mean, Paris Hilton
hasn’t even been nominated!
That’s why we here at Idolator have decided to right the music industry’s wrongs by celebrating its TRUE triumphs via our very first Video Floppy Awards. #sorrynotsorry all other award shows — you ain’t NOTHING next to Idolator’s Floppys!
Below you’ll find the snubbed videos that we felt were most worthy of being singled out in at least some category or other. Oh, and just FYI, we’ll be hauling the Floppys out whenever we damn well please. Why wait a whole year when the cycle of floptitude is constantly twirling around us at any given moment?
You’ve been warned. More »
