Evidently she doesn’t have to worry about those pesky haters too much: Taylor Swift just shook and shimmied her way to a #1 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.
The 1989 pop titan, who is no stranger to insanely high chart sales, just notched another major victory with the lead single from her forthcoming pop record, which she just performed at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. Naturally, she’s gone and broke a bunch of records while doing so: “‘Shake’ arrives with 544,000 first-week downloads sold in the week ending Aug. 24, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The sum marks the greatest weekly total this year and the fourth-best bow all-time,” reports Billboard. She also broke a radio record, debuting at #9 on Adult Pop Songs and #12 on Pop Songs. Quite simply, Swift just demolished the charts once again.

What the world needs now is another album from Yelle. That’s something I randomly said a couple of months ago and, somewhat surprisingly, the universe has delivered. Via Dr. Luke of all people! The French trio’s third LP Completement Fou was produced entirely by the super-producer and his associates. It drops September 30 on his label, Kemosabe Records.
Yelle’s irreverent brand of electro-pop has won them a loyal cult following around the globe but they still seem like an unlikely fit for the man behind Kesha and Katy Perry‘s mega-hits. However, the union could turn out to be a masterstroke if the brilliant title track is any indication. “Completement Fou” is an intoxicating dose of fizzy French techno — complete with rave keys and a monster chorus. So far, so good. Listen to the electro-anthem (and see the LP’s full tracklist) after the jump. More »
Sara Bareilles is the latest artist to (barely) survive an episode of Sound Advice — a hilarious web series starring Saturday Night Live‘s Vanessa Bayer. She plays a media coach to the stars, who spews bad advice and insults at an alarming rate. While most guests try to grin and bear it (Haim and Bastille), the Grammy-nominated diva can’t contain her fury. And it’s awesome.
After listening to jibes about her hometown and drama-free approach to music, Sara finally loses her cool. ”Do you want me to tell you what a fucking bitch I think you’re being right now?” she asks before defending her image with the amazing quip: “I wear leather. That’s hard!” The look on her face during the exchange is absolutely priceless. Watch the “Brave” hitmaker explode up top. More »
The goddamn mic has been dropped on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge videos, and Donatella Versace had the final word. For her stunning clip, the Grand Drag Queen Of Fashion (no, no Karl Lagerfeld — have a seat, bitch) sat her hot ass in front of a camera and muttered something or other in Donatella-ese while two ridiculously ripped model dudes lorded over her with buckets that look like they cost the Average Joe’s annual salary a piece.
Lady Versace screwed up ALS by calling it “ASL,” but when she went to correct herself, it was too late — Himbo 1 and Himbo 2 poured their buckets on Donatella’s iconic wig, causing her to let out the same blood-curdling shriek we did when we found out will.i.am was exec-producing Britney‘s last album. Grimes has always marched to the beat of her own drum and that has never been more apparent than in Canadian diva’s mind-bendingly weird “Go” video. The 26-year-old hits the desert in the post-apocalyptic romp (which she also directed with her brother) and spends a lot of time waving a large sword around. She also poses in front of long sheets of fabric.
That description doesn’t really do it justice. The striking desert scenes are juxtaposed with nightclub action, which makes the video feel like Mad Max: The Musical. A collaboration with LA-based electro-wizz Blood Diamonds, “Go” was apparently written for Rihanna‘s new album. I can understand why RiRi rejected it — the song is too wild for her rigid brand of urban-pop — but it’s her loss. Watch up top. More »
It’s been a big week for Miss Betty Who, that’s for sure.
After the announcement of her debut LP Take Me When You Go, the singer-songstress just appeared on the Today Show stage this morning to kick off the day with the Movement EP song that started it all: “Somebody Loves You.”
After some small talk about her shoes, hair and the origin of her name (fun fact: it was originally the title of a song she wrote!), Miss Who launched into a spirited performance performance of her synth-y jam, bouncing around and crooning to a fan-filled studio audience. She’s got a lot to be happy about as of late: She’s heading out on tour with Katy Perry down under for the Prismatic World Tour in November.
Check out Betty performing up top, and let us know if you’re excited for her debut LP in the comments below. More »
