Michelle Williams is redefining the soundscape of gospel music on her fourth solo LP Journey To Freedom. The Destiny’s Child diva first showed her intent to shake things up on mid-tempo R&B anthem “Fire” but really went HAM on Beyonce and Kelly Rowland-assisted religious club banger “Say Yes”. Her mission to make faith-based more accessible continues with two new snippets.
The 33-year-old diva surprises on “Need Your Help” — an urban-pop anthem with a distinct ’80s twist courtesy of retro-synths. It’s very promising but Michelle takes it to the next level on “Yes”. The frantic electro-house anthem begins with a massive drop before a male singer demands “put your hands up in the air”. At this rate, Journey To Freedom is shaping up to be one of the most unexpectedly original albums of the year. Listen to the new snippets after the jump. More »
Becky G captured lightning in a bottle with Dr. Luke-produced melodic rap/power-pop banger “Shower”. The infectious sing-a-long anthem is storming up the Billboard Hot 100 and on the cusp of cracking the iTunes top 10. It’s the commercial breakthrough we’ve been waiting for since the 17-year-old first started making waves in 2012 with a bunch of cute features.
Given her new profile as the savior of Latin-infused hip-hop/pop, now is as good a time as any to revisit Becky G’s early cuts. While her verse on Cher Lloyd‘s “Oath” is perhaps her best-known feature, she also brightened up Cody Simpson‘s “Wish U Were Here” (still his best single) and stole the show on the rap remix of Kesha‘s “Die Young”. 5 Seconds Of Summer are near unstoppable at the moment. The Australian teenagers have topped iTunes twice (“Don’t Stop” and “Amnesia”) and already racked up three top 50 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 from their self-titled debut LP, which dropped today (July 22). It looks certain to land at number one next week — a feat the newcomers have achieved in 11 other countries.
The boys dropped by Today this morning to perform breakthrough hit “She Looks So Perfect” and the aforementioned “Amnesia” in front of thousands of screaming fans. 5SOS know how to bring it live and drove the crowd into a frenzy with their tight musicianship and catchy hooks. One Direction finally has some legitimate competition. Watch up top and after the jump. More »
Gearing up for her highly anticipated debut LP Goddess, LA singer-songwriter BANKS has been spontaneously releasing tracks into cyberspace to give listeners a little taste of what’s in store, premiering yet another brand new track “Beggin For Thread” yesterday (July 21).
However, unlike the hypnotic number “Drowning” and Shlohmo-produced single “BRAIN,” the latest song is more menacing than ever and, dare we say it, radio-friendly? More upbeat than usual, the tune helps bring BANKS’ glorious pipes to the forefront against the hazy, synth-laden melody, bringing a whole new dimension to this soulstress on the rise.

Late last year, a newcomer named Chelsea Lankes captivated us with her lush and appropriately haunting debut single, “Ghost.” The song went on to become a major blogosphere sensation, racking up over 400K plays on Soundcloud alone.
She’s back now — and just in time to lead us into the second half of summer with her equally stunning new single, “Secret.”
While every bit as great as her debut, the long-awaited follow-up is a vastly different beast: Bouncing along an uptempo pulse, the silky-voiced Southern songstress revels in a blissful romance on the joyous synth-pop gem. “Every time you pull me closer, feeling like I won’t get over/Between you and me, you are the secret I keep,” she happily swoons. It’s a sincerely catchy, earnest ode that deserves to make Chelsea formally pop before the release of her debut EP, due out later this fall.

Sure, The Chainsmokers’ breakout cut “#SELFIE” has been described as “garbage, paint-by-numbers EDM,” but haters be damned — that hasn’t stopped the NYC duo‘s members Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall from plowing ahead with another gimmicky (at least in title) offering. This time around the guys have popped a singer named Siren in front of the mic for a new tune called — wait for it — “Kanye.”
“One day I’ll stand with a crown on my head like a god,” Siren chirps on the track. The Chainsmokers themselves introduced “Kanye” by way of a short snippet and fur-adorned cover art popped on their Instagram bearing the caption, “You can be anything you want to be!”
We’re not quite sure yet just how much Kanye West fawning happens on the song, but for now you can give the short clip a listen below. More »
