Pharrell has dropped a video for G I R L opening track “Marilyn Monroe.” He sings, “I just want a different girl,” and in the video, he certainly gets his wish. It starts with Pharrell going in to embrace some beautiful goddess, only to see her vanish just before he wakes up from a dream — but then the remainder of the reality-based visual is more like a fantasy, as he’s surrounded by dozens of women dancing to the orchestral funk number in what basically amounts to an ode to the manic pixie dream girl.
There’s also an appearance from the purple-coiffed Kelly Osbourne, who is featured briefly on the track and has struck Pharrell with cupid’s arrow in the visual. Check it out up top. More »
Kelis is one of the industry’s most versatile entertainers: She’s tackled funky, Top 40-friendly R&B (“Milkshake”), hip-hop (“Bossy”), dance floor-ready electronica (“Acapella”) and now, she’s moved into the throwback soul arena, tossing blaring horns, gentle guitars and rich vocals into the appropriately titled Food, a filling homemade concoction released yesterday (April 22) via Ninja Tune. (Have you checked out the review yet?)
Featuring foodie-friendly titled cuts like “Jerk Ribs,” and “Biscuits ‘n’ Gravy,” as well as “Rumble,” the album takes us out of the dance floor and into the dining room for some tasty sonic grub.
Since we believe all good music should be served at high volume, we’re giving away a 3-room Sonos Wireless HiFi system to blast this Food out loud. Want to win? Head below to find out how. More »
Kiesza, her love affair with ’90s dance music and the success she’s having in the UK at the moment have all come full circle. Following the Canadian singer’s ascent to the top of the British chart this week with debut single “Hidewaway,” she’s unveiled a video for her haunting piano-and-synth cover of Haddaway‘s Eurodance staple “What Is Love,” which NME premiered this week.
Originally released in 1993, “What Is Love” danced its way to the upper reaches of charts around the globe (and, of course, even gained a second life later in the decade thanks to this Saturday Night Live skit). Here, Kiesza and several extras symbolically go naked in the visual and delivers a stunningly stripped-down version of the tune.
If you’re at all squeamish about NSFW material, be warned: there are (the top halves of) butts. Otherwise, head below to watch Kiesza’s take on the song, plus the original Haddaway video. More »
After debuting a couple Ghost Stories tracks during their concert at SXSW, Coldplay have unveiled another album cut in a live setting, today (April 23) performing “Oceans” for BBC Radio 1′s Live Lounge.
While the restrained, generally hushed tone of the band’s new material has invited comparisons to their debut album, “Oceans” is the first track that truly feels like it could’ve come from a Parachutes session. There’s hardly a hook to be found, but it’s a lovely, slightly forlorn sway of a song, with an acoustic guitar anchoring Chris Martin‘s meandering falsetto amidst some swirling atmospherics. Perhaps the studio version has a heftier arrangement, but for now, it sounds like the unassuming, pre-”Clocks” iteration of the band.

Wiz Khalifa has scored himself a nice little hit with his trappy Auto-Tuned party anthem “We Dem Boyz.” And just as he knows how to make a hit out of the simplest of hooks (“Black and Yellow,” anyone?), he also knows how to charm a TV audience with some simple “stoner zonked out on the couch” behavior. Earlier this month, he cooked up some weed snacks on Arsenio, and Monday (April 22) Wiz appeared on Chelsea Lately to get that Blacc Hollywood promo with guest host T.J. Miller.
The main takeaway from the appearance is that Wiz has a strain of weed named after him (Khalifa Kush), which he gets for free from the marijuana company that sponsors him. Watch him talk about the incredible business deal up top. More »
Glee’s fifth season has all been leading up to this: Rachel Berry’s (Lea Michele) opening night on Broadway. In fact, she’s been dreaming of this night since we first met her on the show so five years ago. With the pressure mounting for her to perform, the big question of the episode will be whether or not she’ll be able to pull it off, or if she’s going to choke on the stage for all the world to see.
