Selena Gomez had a particularly bad day when KIIS Jingle Ball 2013 rolled into Los Angeles on Friday night (December 6). The 21-year-old experienced audio issues and was overheard swearing. The performance also brought her vocal chops into question but she effortlessly bounced back with a lovely acoustic rendition of “Naturally” last night (December 8).
The 21-year-old was a changed woman at the Seattle show. For starters, that unflattering Louise Brooks wig was discarded — and hopefully incinerated — in favor of her own long locks and she delivered consummate performance. The highlight was an adorable stripped back version of 2010 hit “Naturally”, which showcased her sweet live vocals. Watch up top. More »
Lupe Fiasco is doing the not-particularly-surprising thing and serving it up old school-style in the video for his new single “Old School,” which sees him reflecting on how his hometown of Chicago has changed from, y’know, the good ol’ days. Featuring an almost blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance from vocal guest Ed Sheeran, the video mostly takes place against animated backgrounds in Chi-Town, making good use of intercut footage to paint a portrait of how the city has evolved.
It’s a sweet and nostalgic clip that fits the breezy vibe of the song. More »
On Glee, Lea Michele graduated from William McKinley High to NYADA, and from a character who series writers seemed to have run out of ideas for in Season 3 to one of three faces who now have viewers breathing a collective sigh of relief when they pop up in each episode (the other two being fellow Glee vets Chris Colfer and Naya Rivera).
So here we are prepping for 2014, which will hopefully boast far better creative output from the music sphere than 2013 did. Lea finds herself going for pop glory by throwing a cap into the mainstream ring with upcoming album Louder, the tracklist for which was revealed today. First single/album opener “Cannonball” was penned by Sia, something immediately evident in the minute-and-a-half preview of the song now available online. “I won’t hide inside, I gotta get out, gotta get out, gotta get out,” Michele sings in the lead-up to the chorus, with a vocal delivery reminiscent of Sia’s own unique phrasing acrobatics.

The internet has been buzzing about a potential Shakira/Rihanna duet since a vague report appeared in a Colombian gossip magazine last week. What seemed like flimsy proof at first has been bolstered by whispers that the “Hips Don’t Lie” diva is in Los Angeles filming a video with the Barbadian babe and even a Twitter slip from the new mom’s body double.
In a tweet that was subsequently removed — don’t worry, we got a screen grab! — Alexita Ortiz wrote: “Working on set with Shakira:) As her stand in for the new music video featuring Rihanna”. That was confirmed, to some extent, by a tweet from the Columbian goddess saying: “I Just finished the video for my first single with director Joseph Kahn!”
I guess we’ll have to wait until an official announcement but it’s a tantalizing prospect. Shakira’s duet with Beyonce was a worldwide smash and a collab with RiRi would, no doubt, find similar success. It would also been a strong start to a complicated album campaign that has suffered a string of setbacks and postponements since 2012. See the tweets after the jump. More »
Emeli Sande is a (rapidly) rising star in America but, at home, she’s an untouchable chart force — and has the receipts to prove it! Her much-praised debut LP Our Version Of Events is the UK’s best-selling album for the second year in a row. It sold 640,000 copies in 2013, bringing its total to an eye-watering 2.03 million units.
Who else featured in the nation’s top 10 best-selling albums? Michael Buble‘s To Be Loved came second with 456,000 copies sold, while the Les Miserables motion picture soundtrack rounded out the top three. There were some surprises, notably Bastille‘s Bad Blood and Jake Bugg‘s self-titled LP. See the full top 10 after the jump. More »
Britney Spears has unveiled yet another short clip from her forthcoming “Perfume” music video. And it’s, well, it’s only five seconds long. But there’s so much subtext in those five seconds! In the snippet from the visual, Britney is walking away from a handsome man — the same guy from the two clips Brit Instagrammed over the weekend. She seems to be smiling, but he seems dejected, and hopefully we’ll find out why when the full video premieres Tuesday (December 10).
Spears said she “had to dig deep and really play with some acting chops for this one,” but she also said that Britney Jean was a personal album, so who even knows what to expect. More »
