NBC did the impossible last night (December 5) — they aired a live, three-hour staging of The Sound Of Music featuring a country singer who has no professional theater experience in the lead role. So they’ve done it (to the tune of $9 million, reportedly), but should they have done it? Well, that depends on who you ask. The general temperature of the Web seems to be that it made for an entertaining night, but not always for the right reasons.
Of course, we’re most interested in how Carrie Underwood did carrying the special as Maria von Trapp, the role made famous by Julie Andrews. The consensus is that Underwood nailed the songs, but once the music stopped and she was forced to act, she was less than stellar, leading to some stale chemistry with the Captain.
Head below for our review revue comprising reactions from critics across the Internet. And as for Carrie’s reaction? Don’t worry, we’ve included that in our roundup, too. More »
Daft Punk have premiered their “Instant Crush” video today (December 6), hours after previewing a clip on French TV. And what was hinted at in that teaser is a reality in the full version: there’s no participation from the French Robots themselves (however, their helmets do make a very brief appearance).
Instead, the visual stars the song’s featured singer, Julian Casablancas., performing on an empty soundstage in a rad leather jacket. But the main story involves a museum statue of Casablancas falling for a female statue in a nearby exhibit. It sounds like a dumb premise, but I have to say, they managed to wrench a good amount of emotion out of two inanimate objects. And the quirky narrative is a solid fit for the melancholy cheese of the song.

Pop made a major resurgence in the latter half of the previous decade, and brought us bright new stars like Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Ke$ha and One Direction. But when all the dust on the past 12 months finally settles, 2013 may very well prove to be the year that Big Pop first began to go bust. Don’t stress too much about it, though — there’s a cyclical ebb and flow with this tide we call music, and today’s Syron may very well wind up being tomorrow’s Britney.
And so here we are in early December, bringing you our annual roundup of the year’s 10 best albums, as chosen by the Idolator crew made up of Robbie Daw, Sam Lansky, Carl Williott, Mike Wass and Bradley Stern. Aside from one iconic dance-pop act, a pair of hip hop luminaries and a sibling indie pop pair who surprised us all with the turn they took with their seventh album, a bulk of our picks are symbolic of the new breed of artists making an impression on the musical landscape. We probably wouldn’t have predicted their inclusion here a year ago — or even known who one or two of them were — but if Baauer taught us anything in 2013 (don’t worry — he’s not on this list), it was to expect the unexpected.
Head below to see the fresh new faces and the seasoned acts who bent our ears in their direction, and gave us our favorite 10 albums of the year. More »

Ke$ha is back on top with Pitbull-assisted smash “Timber” but decided to squeeze in some cheeky Warrior promo by sharing a wild and wonderful live video for LP highlight “Gold Trans Am” on YouTube today (December 15). Needless to say, Lady Dolla goes hard and risks vaginal electrocution — literally — by playing with power tools.
The beard-loving diva’s music always has a rock edge when performed live and this is no exception. K$ begins the performance clinging to a metal frame before prowling the stage with her male dancers. That’s when the big boy/girl toys come out and sparks fly. Watch Ke$ha kick ass up top. More »
After the record-breaking Australian leg of The Mrs. Carter Show, Beyonce took a well-deserved break in Jamaica before embarking on the final North American dates of her world tour. The R&B icon stayed at an oceanfront villa with husband Jay Z and even enjoyed a visit from sister Solange.
What did she get up? From the pics Bey uploaded to Tumblr, it looks like she spent most of her time soaking up the Caribbean sun as well as doing some sightseeing and getting her drink on. Not that it seems to have affected her famous figure. Beyonce is in ridiculous shape — as her bikini pics prove. Has she been watching Kelly Rowland‘s Sexy Abs workout DVD? More »
