Remember when Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber trolled us into thinking they were recording a duet by sharing a behind-the-scenes studio pic on Instagram? Well, someone kindly asked Ari about the missing collaboration in a recent interview and she put its conspicuous absence from My Everything down to being busy. Sure, that sounds likely.
“We were working on it. We were in the studio together… We were going to do it, but then we both got busy,” the 21-year-old told the Associated Press. “I had to focus on my stuff and he was focusing on his, and it just sort of didn’t really get done.” Ariana promises that the duet will emerge “one day” but it’s probably in the trash folder on her laptop next to her Chris Brown collab “Don’t Be Gone Too Long”. 5 Seconds Of Summer‘s self-titled debut LP landed at number one on the Billboard 200 this week and the band is celebrating their success by releasing a video for new single “Amnesia”. The summer smash, which was co-penned by Benji and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte fame, is already the foursome’s highest charting single — peaking (thus far) at number 16.
Given the anthem’s intense break-up theme, you’d be forgiven for thinking the video would depict relationship woes. Instead, it takes the Aussie teens back to the garage where they practiced pre-fame and follows their adventures on a perfect summer’s day (shopping cart races, road trips and a pool party). There’s still a slight twist of melancholy to the clip, which fits “Amnesia” perfectly. Watch up top. More »
Finally a sporting event Idolator readers can get behind that isn’t men’s diving. Kylie Minogue has been tapped to headline the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland on August 3. She will share the stage with local stars Lulu, Deacon Blue, Prides and Dougie MacLean in front of an expected 40,000+ spectators.
There’s no word on the pop icon’s setlist yet but expect to hear a bunch of old classics instead of Kiss Me Once cuts. Kylie famously sang “On A Night Like This” (and covered ABBA‘s “Dancing Queen”) at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, so it would be interesting to see a repeat performance. The closing ceremony will be televised live in 72 countries. Check your listings. More »
Katy Perry threw a little shade in her recent Rolling Stone cover story but, as far as I can tell, told no lies. Little Monsters are still reeling at the prospect of the Prism diva possibly taking aim at Lady Gaga‘s martyr antics (she never mentioned her by name) but the world has already moved on. Which is a shame because the photo shoot was really cute!
A new pic surfaced online and it’s totally adorable. Katy shows off her toned tummy while rocking a fluffy pink top and green alien earring (that matches her hair). It’s like the ’90s never ended. The 29-year-old the video for “This Is How We Do” today (August 1) and it’s another candy-colored winner. Maybe she’ll have the two most-watched videos of 2014 by the end of the year? MAGIC!‘s “Rude” is really giving Iggy Azalea‘s “Fancy” a run for its money in the race for song of the summer glory. The reggae-tinged debut single from super-producer Nasri‘s side project (turned main priority) just racked up its third week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and doesn’t appear to be going anywhere soon.
A new rap version will, no doubt, help keep that momentum going. Kid Ink, Ty Dolla $ign and Travis Barker jump on the remix — shifting the focus of the song from the overprotective father to the object of Nasri’s affection. It’s interesting experiment but I think I’ll stick with the original. Anyway, make up your own mind after the jump. More »
In lieu of his soon to be released EP Mabel, up-and-coming UK producer Lil Silva has put out both the title track of the EP as well as synthy number “First Mark” to gear people up for what’s in store. Now, the bedroom beatsmith is back with “Don’t You Love,” and this time around, he’s working with recurring collaborator and our favorite LA soulstress-on-the-rise BANKS.
Having produced her Goddess title track, Lil Silva and BANKS wrote two songs together for Mabel. The first, ”Don’t You Love” is a slow burner that builds carefully and meticulously. Poignant and delicate, the track progresses as Lil Silva’s own fluid vocals seep through followed by BANKS’ gentle croons. While their voices aren’t meant to be the focal point, they’ll still have you humming “Don’t you lo-o-o-ve” by the end of it. Listen to ”Don’t You Love” below. More »
