Like many divas before her, Victoria Monet first generated attention for her songwriting ability. She penned tracks for Ariana Grande, Chris Brown, Fifth Harmony and Mary J. Blige before moving into the spotlight with a string of killer features. The rising diva recently signed with Atlantic Records and just dropped the first half — or Act 1 — of her debut LP Nightmares & Lullabies.
The exquisite five-song set captures the newcomer’s knack for pairing soft, delicate vocals with deeply atmospheric soundscapes. Highlights include B.o.B-assisted single “For The Thrill” (an eerie mash of strings, hip-hop beats and haunting synths) and the sultry “Made In China”. Nightmares & Lullabies is available to download for free on Victoria’s website. You can also find it on iTunes. More »
This is — hands down — the weirdest music beef of 2014. Phil Collins surprised everyone earlier this year when he revealed that he was writing songs for Adele‘s new album. It sounded like an odd pairing in theory and obviously didn’t pan out too well in practice either. It seems the ’80s hitmaker simply didn’t hear back from the mega-selling songbird. Ouch.
“[Adele] got hold of me and asked if I would write with her,” Phil told Q magazine. “She gave me a piece of music to finish and at first I didn’t know if I’d failed the audition as I didn’t hear back from her.” This is where it gets a little/a lot messy. “She said, ‘no, no, I’m moving house and the baby’s taking up a lot of my time, I’m not actually doing anything at the moment’.”
“And now I’ve heard there’s a [new album] coming out,” the 63-year-old continues. “I’m not on it, I know that.” Well, that’s incredibly awkward. His verdict? “She’s a slippery little fish is Adele.” More »
The wait is finally over! Jasmine Villegas just unveiled the cover and tracklist of her debut EP That’s Me Right There (due 10 November). The 20-year-old looks incredible on the sexy artwork — rocking a white one-piece and matching heels. It suits the exciting new direction of her music, which is personified by the catchy Kendrick Lamar-assisted title track.
It looks like K-Dot is the only feature on the EP, which means the collaboration Jasmine recorded with Problem and Jeremih has either been shelved or saved for her album. (Fingers crossed it’s the latter). Given her incredible popularity on social media and string of catchy singles, it’s hard to believe that this is the “Werk” diva’s first official Extended Play.
“Jasminators it’s been a long time coming but our first official ep will finally be here 11/10!” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank u so much for being on this journey with me and continuing to always be by my side. I love u all to pieces this is only the beginning the best is yet to come.” See the full tracklist after the jump. More »
Mariah Carey‘s world tour The Elusive Chanteuse Show got off to a shaky start in Tokyo, Japan with reports of vocal troubles but the legendary diva appears to have found her groove. The 44-year-old recently created history in China by becoming the first western artist to play five stadiums (she was also the first western artist to perform in Tianjin province) and has been selling out shows across Asia.
Mimi rolled into Bangkok, Thailand last night/today — depending on where you live — and got her Halloween on by rocking a sexy Mrs. Claus ensemble that showed off her famous curves. It’s great to see Mariah having so much while being the most important US cultural ambassador to visit Asia, possibly ever. See more cute pics from her Thai Halloween celebration after the jump. It looks like MTV accidentally confirmed that Beyonce is performing at the EMAs! The broadcaster just uploaded a promo video to their YouTube account with the description: “Don’t miss Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, Iggy Azalea, Eminem and more performing Sunday, November 9th.” It could just be a mistake but the other three artists mentioned have already been announced, so maybe they let the cat out of the bag?
If Queen Bey does take the stage, it will be the diva’s first televised performance since that mesmerizing medley at the MTV VMAs in September. And if she does appear, it’s a pretty safe bet that she’ll perform the “***Flawless” remix with Nicki Minaj — after all, the femcee is hosting the event. See the cute promo video and a screengrab of the description after the jump. More »
Last night (October 29), we at Idolator were invited to attend a private screening of Mary J. Blige‘s new documentary in New York City’s Soho House. The film (directed by Sam Wrench) captured all the moments it took to create the singer’s upcoming album — The London Sessions.
Recording began this summer, with the diva spending one month in London’s studios. Heavy hitters like Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Capitol Records’ CEO Steve Barnett, songwriter Jimmy Napes, Sam Smith, Emeli Sandé, Naughty Boy and Sam Romans all make appearances in the film. The London Sessions is such a different sound for Blige, with its core being rootes in ’90s-influenced UK house. The film reveals the inspiration sparked when she collaborated with Disclosure in January for their hit, “F For You.” The British brothers stated, “I hope [the album] causes a stir. She could go in the studio with Timbaland, but she chose two boys from Surrey!” More »
Becky G scored a long-overdue commercial breakthrough in the summer with bubbly pop anthem “Shower”. The unstoppable earworm became the 17-year-old’s first top 20 entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and opened the door for a support slot on Katy Perry‘s blockbuster Prismatic tour. She’s now ready to drop equally great follow-up single “Can’t Stop Dancin’” and unveiled the cover today (October 30) on Instagram.
It’s certainly a colorful affair with Becky posing against a bright yellow background. There are also some blood red roses, which adds some dramatic flair. “Can’t Stop Dancin’” is a massive change of pace for Dr. Luke‘s protege. The mid-tempo, tropical pop song shows there’s more to her than rapping and club bangers. The “Can’t Get Enough” diva is expected to drop the video next week. More »
Miley Cyrus wore as little as possible on the amfAR Gala red carpet last night (october 29) and still got completely upstaged by Rihanna. She proved that nipple pasties and side-splits can be elegant and sophisticated when teamed with a Tom Ford gown. Both divas were both in attendance to pay tribute to the fashion designer, who was given the event’s Inspiration award.
“Over the past 20 years, Tom Ford has been honored with every major fashion award there is,” RiRi told the star-stuffed crowd at the charity event. “Tonight, we honor him both for his incredible talent and for what he stands for. We honor him for doing good while making us look good.” The “Stay” hitmaker also raised money for the event by dropping $100,000 on a photo of Elizabeth Taylor. (She also bought some earrings for the modest price of $35,000). See another pic of Rih’s stunning gown after the jump. More »
BANKS has been quite busy over the past few months: her masterful debut album Goddess was released on September 9, she recently wrapped up her accompanying tour in North America and will embark on the European leg next month. Today, NPR released an intimate performance from the singer as part of their “Tiny Desk Concerts” series.
Situated in what looks to be a quaint library classroom, the singer gives a smooth and breezy rendition of her latest single “Beggin’ For Thread,” an acoustic version of “Brain” and the fiery album opener — “Alibi.” The cozy atmosphere leans itself nicely to BANKS’ tender and emotive vocals. More »
Taylor Swift is striking while the iron is hot. The 24-year-old, who is now expected to sell a whopping 1.2 million copies of 1989 this week, is already moving on from lead single “Shake It Off” — despite the fact that it’s still number one on iTunes and lodged at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 behind Meghan Trainor‘s blockbuster hit “All About That Bass”.
According to her label, the next single from 1989 is “Blank Space” and it’s set to impact radio on November 10. The Max Martin/Shellback anthem addresses Taylor’s lengthy dating history with cheeky lyrics about her little black book. “Got a long list of ex-lovers, they’ll tell you I’m insane,” the former country/current pop queen sings. “But I got a blank space baby and I’ll write your name.” Who could resist that offer?
