Even without Drake, the show must go on! And so tonight (December 6) we learned who is up for music’s biggest awards at The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live!! (that is not an indicator of our actual excitement level, it’s the honest-to-god name of the thing). In between performances from the likes of Taylor Swift and Lorde, and boilerplate Grammy hype from anthropomorphic Kangol hat LL Cool J, we actually got the nominees for next year’s ceremony. And they were kind of unpredictable!
Sure, you had the requisite honors for “Get Lucky,” “Blurred Lines,” Pink, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry and all things Macklemore, but Lorde also joined the big leagues with Song and Record of the year nominations, while Sara Bareilles improbably scored an Album of the Year nomination.
Head below to see the list of nominees for the 56th annual Grammy Awards, which will air live on CBS at 8 p.m. EST on January 26. That gives you plenty of time to argue about the biggest snubs (Justin Timberlake??) and surprises (Kendrick Lamar for Album Of The Year!). More »
Did you feel that festive feeling this week? The Christmas season is truly upon us — and now that Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande, Kelly Clarkson and Leona Lewis serenaded us at the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony, it’s really official.
But the pop releases haven’t stopped just yet! Our beloved ringleader Britney Spears released her eighth studio album Britney Jean, her Most Personal Album Ever, while we saw new releases from the likes of Justin Bieber. Lana Del Rey dropped her long-awaited, gorgeously shot mini-film Tropico. And, we at Idolator started taking a look back at 2013 with our favorite albums list. Did your favorites make the cut too? If not — don’t worry, we’ve got a readers poll going too! And, we even got some of our faves to weigh in on their faves, starting with Tegan & Sara.
And finally, Idol alum Carrie Underwood pulled off the (near) impossible with a live staging of The Sound Of Music on NBC. It was a ratings smash — but did you like it? As always, you guys had plenty to say about this week’s pop happenings. More »
Avicii is gaining something a reputation for churning out epic videos, so the stakes are high for worldwide smash “Hey Brother”. Happily, it looks like Swede has struck gold again. At least if the patriotic military-themed preview is any indication.
The thirty second teaser is a nostalgic affair. There is war footage intercut with what appear to be wholesome home movies. We’re treated to glimpses of a military funeral, fireworks and soldiers. The blockbuster video promises to pull hard on our heartstrings. Watch up top. More »
Lady Gaga‘s much-anticipated “Do What U Want” video is almost ready! Director Terry Richardson shared a pic from the set today (December 6) and, if it’s any indication, we’re in for an eye-popping extravaganza with minimal clothing and a surprising lack of wigs.
The black and white photo shows Mother Monster riding R. Kelly in black lingerie. Her hair looks remarkably natural and she’s giving her duet partner a rather disgruntled look. Or perhaps that’s her come hither stare? Whatever the case, expect sexual tension and controversy from the finished product. More »
Remember when Lady Gaga‘s “Dope” reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 after an awards show performance and fell out of the top 50 the following week? That was an extreme example of the power of streaming in determining chart position. YouTube views, viral videos and Vevo premieres are now a major variable in landing a hit.
And when it comes to generating attention, sex is still the answer. Miley Cyrus‘ nude ride on a wrecking ball caught everyone’s attention, Robin Thicke and his scantily clad ladies helped make “Blurred Lines” the biggest hit of the veteran crooner’s career and Katy Perry‘s cleavage-showcasing jungle jaunt helped propel “Roar” to number one.
It almost goes without saying that those three eye-popping visuals appear on Vevo’s list of the 10 most-watched music videos of 2013 but there are some surprises. Will.i.am and Britney Spears‘ “Scream & Shout” video punched above its weight as did One Direction‘s “Kiss You”. The big spoiler? Well, see for yourself after the jump. More »
The jubilant, pregnant Kelly Clarkson stopped by Ellen earlier today to talk with Ellen Degeneres about a litany of issues — but really, it was all about her morning sickness — as well as to perform her Yuletide classic “Underneath The Tree” from her platinum-selling Christmas album Wrapped In Red. Between sounding off on crazy celebrity baby names and asking for a bucket (seriously), the pop songstress made quite the impression. Was she hormonal or is she always that giddy? Who cares! It’s adorable.
As usual, her vocal performance on “Underneath The Tree” was unparalleled — but then, it’s Kelly Clarkson. She always delivers. More »
