Shawn Mendes stunned most commentators when “Life Of The Party” rocketed straight to number one on iTunes. He became the first social media heavy-hitter (his medium of choice is Vine) to make the leap to legitimate pop star — sparking a rush of successful releases from the likes of Troye Sivan and Jack And Jack. All eyes will be on him again when follow-up single “Something Big” drops on November 10.

A New Dawn

Dawn Richard has bounced back from the smoldering disaster that was Danity Kane‘s comeback with her dignity and career intact. (Which is more than Aubrey O’Day and Shannon Bex can say). She returns to the solo grind with a typically interesting and progressive electro-R&B anthem “Blow” — the first taste of her sophomore LP Blackheart (due January 15).

The 31-year-old also unveiled the video today (October 29) and it’s a arty affair that showcases Dawn’s unique visual approach. “The imagery and focus of this record is an introduction to the [Heart] movement and what it stands for,” she says in regards to her fans and collaborators. “In a time where numbers and stats matter, we simply don’t give a fuck if you like us. We are here. We are strong and we are beautifully imperfect.” Fair enough! See the alt-R&B diva’s album cover after the jump. More »

Party Hard!

Calvin Harris dropped a surprise video for R3hab collaboration “Burnin’” this afternoon (October 29) to new LP Motion (due November 4). The Scottish DJ has largely focussed on the album’s star-filled features such as the Ellie Goulding-assisted “Outside” and Gwen Stefani-voiced “Together”, so it’s nice to see one of the instrumental tracks getting some attention.

The visual was filmed at this year’s EDC Las Vegas, which gives it a surprisingly raw quality. You almost feel like you’re in the middle of all those turnt revelers, watching Calvin and his Dutch pal work their magic behind the decks. The video is simple enough but it’s material like this that will keeps clubs/festivals hopping for the next few months, rather than the pop-friendly anthems. Watch up top. More »

Chin Up!

Ingrid Michaelson sneakily gave herself a winning pop makeover on new LP Lights Out and nobody seemed to notice until infectious lead single “Girls Chase Boys” caught fire on radio and slowly rose the Billboard Hot 100 — eventually becoming the 34-year-old’s second biggest hit. She looks get to repeat that success with uplifting anthem “Afterlife”.

After teasing the project with a topless cover, Ingrid finally unveiled the video today (October 29) and it’s a surprisingly moving affair that finds the bespectacled diva helping fans overcome their fears. It sounds corny and, to a certain extent, it is but you have to be made of rock not to be affected by the feel-good shenanigans. The pop game is an infinitely better place with the singer/songwriter in it. Watch up top. More »
