Rap legends Salt-N-Pepa haven’t troubled the Billboard Hot 100 since the late ’90s when they scored hit after hit with hip-hop/pop classics “Shoop”, “Let’s Talk About Sex” and their iconic En Vogue collaboration “Whatta Man”, but the trio (I’m counting Spinderella) remains active on the live circuit — regularly performing shows around the world. They are also getting money from corporate America. Take their amusing appearance in a new commercial for Geico Insurance.
The ladies belt out their signature song “Push It” to random people trying to move (ie. push) objects. Salt-N-Pepa help people open doors and press buttons in elevators. Oh, and they also encourage a man to mow his lawn. It’s kind of corny but the femcees look incredible and it’s all in good fun. Who wouldn’t want these divas inspiring you to carry out every day tasks? Watch the soon-to-be viral video after the jump. More »
“How To Be A Supergirl” is the headline ASOS magazine chose for their Taylor Swift issue and it’s pretty apt given the mounting sales tally of new LP 1989. The “Shake It Off” diva’s cover story deserves an equally dazzling pictorial and photographer Ben Sullivan does a good job of capturing the 24-year-old at her most heroic and glamorous in a series of retro-inspired outfits. (She even pulls off the always difficult socks and heels combination. Respect!)
“When I’m getting dressed, it’s always based on what my friends will think,” the record-breaking blond told ASOS. “They are my number one priority and the opinions of girls are more important to me at this point in my life.” It’s been another big week for Taylor. She won the Dick Clark Award For Excellence at Sunday night’s (November 23) American Music Awards and held court from the front row. The former country queen will next appear at the Victoria’s Secret show on December 9. Peruse her pics up top. More »
Azealia Banks is giving away $10,000 for the best remix of “Chasing Time” as part of a new competition to promote debut LP Broke With Expensive Taste. The ’90s house-referencing floorfiller is already pretty hard to beat as far as club monsters go, so fans and producers — the comp is also open to professionals — really have their work cut out for them. One of the best overhauls to appear on SoundCloud belongs to veteran DJ Rich Morel.
The Boston-based producer is probably best-known for his work with electronic duo Deep Dish and for producing some of the best tracks (“Same Ol’ Story”,”Raging Storm” and “Set Your Heart”) on Cyndi Lauper‘s dance opus Bring Ya To The Brink. He strips the ’90s flourishes from “Chasing Time” and pumps up the BPM. What’s left is one hell of house anthem that is at least as good as Azealia’s original. Listen after the jump. More »
Bette Midler opened the library and read Ariana Grande like a book in a recent interview with The Telegraph. “It’s always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch… looking so ridiculous,” she said of the “Love Me Harder” diva, before declaring: “You don’t have to make a whore out of yourself to get ahead.” Ouch!
The 21-year-old finally responded today (November 25) with a passive aggressive tweet. “Bette was always a feminist who stood for women being able to do whatever the F they wanted without judgement!” she wrote. “Not sure where that Bette went but I want that sexy mermaid back!!! Always a fan no matter what my love.” Ariana also included a picture of the pop legend wearing a bikini as a little dig. See her tweet after the jump. More »
Hold on to your wigs, #RihannaNavy! Rihanna just pulled a fast (and highly unexpected) move on Instagram, choosing to switch out her usual sexy selfies for an actual song snippet! Yes, this is NOT a drill!
The brief preview only lasts for a few seconds, but it is just enough of a tease to hold us over for what’s to come from the Bajan songstress. It features a looping and ominous hook (“Ain’t none of this shit promised/Ain’t none of this promised) over a wobbly, alt-R&B production. No words when #R8, the nickname for Rihanna’s eighth LP, will be released — but let’s just hope it’ll be a Christmas treat.

With her upcoming album The London Sessions, Mary J. Blige decided to escape her R&B-heavy comfort zone and try out a fresh sound. All of the songs that have been released so far seem very promising, and now the full LP is available for stream!
The London Sessions is a smooth blend of R&B, soul, dance and ’90s-inspired UK house — which is fitting since the singer gathered some awesome artists for the project. Sam Smith, Disclosure, Emeli Sande, Naughty Boy and Jimmy Napes all took part in the LP, either by writing or producing. It includes tracks like “Right Now,” “Follow,” “Nobody But You” and “Therapy.”
You can take a listen to The London Sessions over at iTunes Radio before it officially releases on December 2. Let us know what you think in the comments below! More »
UK-based trio Years & Years have followed up their Real EP with brand new single “Desire,” a stomping, whomping house track that could just see them go from emergent dance act opening for Sam Smith on tour to bona fide hit-makers before long. “Desire” comes packed with an irresistible chorus, a soul-grabbing house hook and a dramatic music video directed by Sing J Lee, who also lensed Gorgon City‘s “Ready For Your Love” and Chvrches‘ “The Mother We Share.”
“Is it desire or is it love that I’m feeling for you,” Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander ponders on the chorus of “Desire.” A press release describes the track as conveying the “cyclical conflict of being a slave to desire and the blurring between the lines of lust and love.” Sounds pretty accurate to us. You can either breathe easy or let out a great sigh of disappointment, because Jessie J and Ariana Grande are not teaming up to remake Brandy and Monica‘s R&B classic, “The Boy Is Mine.”
Despite the fact that Darkchild seemingly confirmed the collaboration for his upcoming 20th anniversary project, according to the UK’s Mirror, Jessie J quickly shot down those rumors herself on the American Music Awards red carpet. In fact, she even went so far as to reach out to Brandy about the idea.
“No, it’s not true, neither of us have agreed. Sadly people are believing it. I spoke to Brandy and I was like, ‘no it’s not happening’. Monica and Brandy are the best,” she said. It would be odd for Darkchild to dream up a collaboration without asking either of the participants, but that seems like a pretty stone-cold “no” on Jessie’s part, right? Ah, well. Maybe he was just listening to too much “Bang Bang.” More »
Selena Gomez clearly doesn’t believe in resting on your laurels. After generating an avalanche of praise for her emotional performance of “The Heart Wants What It Wants” at Sunday night’s (November 23) American Music Awards, the 22-year-old would be forgiven for taking a minute to soak up the triumph. Instead, she’s already in the studio working on her next album. And the baby-faced diva is using her current hit single as a reference point.
“It’s exciting for me to start off with something like ['The Heart Wants What It Wants']” she revealed in a radio interview. “And then start leading into writing about all the other things that are going on in my life and have gone on in the past year or so.” It’s obvious that Selena is taking a very different approach for her first project with Interscope Records. “I’m excited to put more of my heart and soul into the next chapter of music.” The LP, which is expected to drop mid-2015, is shaping up to be a blockbuster. Diplo, Skrillex and Kiesza throw a major, dance-filled party in their video for “Take You There.” The single, the first official track from the EDM producers as their music duo Jack Ü, was released back in August. Now, it is accompanied by a energetic black + white visual that finds the three artists performing at various music festivals, like Austin City Limits.
It is also interjected with kooky animated clips and fun dance sequences. Watch the video for “Take You There” up top. More »
