Well, it’s official: Sam Smith can truly say he’s lonely no more.
The UK soul crooner is now the only artist to sell one million copies both here in the US and the UK, according to the Official Charts Company.
Smith’s debut LP, In The Lonely Hour, officially passed the million mark overnight, one of only two UK records to do so overseas — the other being Ed Sheeran‘s x. At the same time, the album was a confirmed million-seller, alongside only Taylor Swift‘s 1989 and Disney’s Frozen soundtrack, by Nielsen Music yesterday.
“OFFICIALLY sold 1 MILLION copies of In The Lonely Hour! To say I am ecstatic is a huge understatement. Thank you so much to every single person who has purchased my album,” said Smith of the achievement.
The talented singer stays winning, too: He just notched his second Billboard Hot 100 Top 5 hit in the US this week with “I’m Not The Only One.” That Sam Smith reign just won’t let up! More »
Nicki Minaj has many personas: Boss Ass Bitch, Roman, Nicki Lewinsky, Ratchet Barb — the list goes on and on! But now, the rapper is trying her hand at modeling, and the results are utterly ***flawless. Minaj is the star of Roberto Cavalli’s Spring/Summer 2015 ad campaign, shot by famed photographer (and Lana Del Rey‘s boyfriend) Francesco Carrozzini.
The “Only” diva flaunts her best poses for the shoot, as she dons flowing summer dresses, bright bodycons and some serious shades. The ad campaign highlights just how pretty Minaj is, and also displays her more woman-like side. The editorial photos come straight after the release of her third LP The Pinkprint, which dropped on December 15. More »
By now you’ve likely seen the shirtless photo of Calvin Harris that was doing the rounds this week, taken during a behind-the-scenes moment while the Scottish producer/DJ was on the set for his Emporio Armani shoot. The 30-year-old is the new face of the label’s 2015 Spring/Summer line, so now he can add the words “top model” to his already-impressive resume.
It turns out there was another shirtless snap of Harris to be found on his Instagram, which you can see in the gallery above, along with pics from the actual Armani campaign. Looks like Versace and Madonna now have some stiff pop star competition lined up for the months ahead. More »
It’s truly a joyful time to be Ed Sheeran right now!
Not only has the singer-songwriter just been nominated for a bunch of Grammy Awards in 2015, but he’s just notched his highest charting single of his career (to date) with “Thinking Out Loud,” the latest single off of x. The song has zoomed up to #6 on the Hot 100 this week according to Billboard, officially surpassing his previous x hits “Sing” (#13) and “Don’t” (#9), making this a major winning streak for the talented crooner — and perhaps only the beginning of the song’s Hot 100 Top 10 success.
Plus, his BFF Taylor Swift is enjoying some major success too! The unstoppable 1989 pop princess is enjoying her fifth week at #1 with “Blank Space,” making the song her most successful Hot 100 hit to date. Coupled with her 3 non-consecutive weeks at #1 with “Shake It Off,” the win also signals her ninth week at #1 overall in 2014, which puts her just ahead of Meghan Trainor‘s 8-week reign with “All About That Bass.” But wait, there’s more! Christmas is exactly one week away and in celebration of the holidays, Little Mix has given their fans a treat! The UK pop group uploaded a cover of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on their Youtube channel today (December 18), as a special thank you! The original version was released by Darlene Love in 1963, and was also covered by Mariah Carey for 1994′s Merry Christmas.
Per usual, the four ladies kill it with their flawless and soulful harmonies as they sing the tune in a studio. The performance itself is quite festive, with a Christmas tree, bright lights and snowflake decorations in the background. Jade, Perrie, Leigh-Anne and Jesy add their own sassy flair with a bit of dancing as they don “ugly” yuletide sweaters and cute headpieces! Look out for Little Mix in 2015, as they’re currently working on their third LP — the follow-up to 2013′s Salute. More »
Folks, the year is coming to a close, and we’re all feeling a bit less uptight…including Lady Gaga, who hit up The Tonight Show last night with her Cheek To Cheek pal Tony Bennett and told a charming story about the time a 70-year-old stripper in Atlanta told the pop diva to take off all her clothes and sing. The pole-dancing senior then had Gaga autograph a beer can so she could crush it between her boobs.
Tony sat quietly beside Gaga as the story played out, seeming amused. And how do you follow up a story about ancient strippers with tin-destroying breasts? By performing a cover of Cole Porter‘s “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye.” Duh.
Watch Gaga and Tony chat above, then catch Mother Monster’s performance below. More »
Earlier this week, we wrote about A.K.A. goddess Jennifer Lopez‘s upcoming New Year’s Eve HBO special Jennifer Lopez: Dance Again, a look back at J.Lo’s incredibly successful Dance Again Tour, complete with documentary footage about the making of the tour, as well as J.Lo’s personal life. And now, there’s a sneak peek at what’s to come.
In a new trailer for the forthcoming special, the “Booty” diva makes her intentions clear: “This is my first world tour ever…I wanna sing live, I wanna dance as I’ve never done before,” she says, as we’re treated to clips of the diva’s highly energetic performances from the tour. Later on, the documentary proves to be more revelatory than just a concert special, as we see the diva breaking down into tears in her hotel room and opening up. “I remember being in my dressing room and not feeling like I could get up in the morning,” she reveals.
Coupled with behind-the-scenes footage of J.Lo and her dancers putting together the tour, as well as glimpses into the singer’s life on the road, this looks to be a pretty compelling special. Will you be tuning in? More »
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, when our favorite artists get together and sing Christmas songs! Last night, Ariana Grande joined Michael Bublé to perform the classic, “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.” The showcase was part of Canadian crooner’s holiday special, appropriately titled Michael Buble’s Christmas In New York. The two entertained the audience with their smooth, jazzy vocals with a live band accompanying them.
Grande apparently had a great time on stage, as she tweeted after the show: “thank u @michaelbuble for having me on your christmas special & for the kind words! u & your band are the greatest! thank u for including me.” Michael Buble’s Christmas In New York aired on NBC yesterday (December 17) at Radio City Music Hall, and featured special guests like Grande, Miss Piggy, the Rockettes and Barbra Streisand. Album sales have dropped precipitously in the last few years, but the format isn’t dead yet, at least when our biggest stars like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Justin Timberlake are concerned. But what about a stretch when most of those stars don’t release an album? In a year when Billboard replaced the album with “album equivalent units,” the biggest storyline in pop music was the absence of albums from the likes of Rihanna, Adele, Kanye West, and Lil Wayne. Think back to the buzziest pop moments of the year, and most of them were entirely separate from the album cycle: the “7/11″ video, the Shmoney Dance. Hell, Drake dominated his genre by releasing a few loosies and features.
With this changing role of the LP, the EP has seen a boost in relevance. Once the realm of half-formed ideas, album session scraps, and stopgap material for diehards, the EP is more important than ever as a statement of artistic purpose. For acts fighting to reach that top tier, the EP can help refine an aesthetic or identity, while labels can invest in a viral star and test the waters with an EP instead of rushing to production on a full-length flop for a Kreayshawn scenario.
So big-picture, it may have been a down year for pop, but at the increasingly vibrant EP level, some stellar things happened. Here’s our list of our 14 favorite EPs from 2014. More »
“I’m a female rebel, can’t you tell?” sang Miley Cyrus on Bangerz highlight “4×4,” and we all know she wasn’t lying. The 22-year-old has been flying through a fucks-free zone since dropping the aforementioned LP. The diva records what she likes (from ’70s folk covers to quirky collaborations with alt-rockers The Flaming Lips), shops at the same place as Courtney Stodden and gets naked as often as possible. All of which makes her utterly iconic.
Even by Miley’s lofty standards, 2014 was a banner year for nudity. While she will never beat Terry Richardson‘s soft-porn shoot for sheer shock value, the pop star makes up for it with consistency. The “Adore You” hitmaker flashed a nipple for W magazine, shared nude Bangerz tour booklet outtakes and stripped off completely for V magazine. She also flooded Instagram with an avalanche of raunchy edits that made life worth living. See the social media pioneer’s sexiest snaps up top. More »
