Talk about an unlikely bedfellows. Selena Gomez has asked R&B veteran Siedah Garrett to write tracks for her new LP. The woman who co-wrote Michael Jackson‘s “Man In The Mirror” (and sang with the King Of Pop on “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”) tweeted a picture with Sel and wrote: “Listening closely to [Selena] as she invites me to write new pop songs for her next album.”

What now? First of all, the 21-year-old is rumored to be putting out a greatest hits compilation later this year with three new tracks but they have already been recorded — so this must be for the follow-up to Stars Dance. Also, Siedah specializes in soulful ballads, which would represent a rather staggering change of pace for Selena. At least we know she’s still serious about music. See the tweet after the jump. Avicii Plans To Go Rock On The Follow-Up To Debut LP ‘True’

Avicii's "Stars"
The Swede producer-DJ revises Coldplay's Ghost Stories hit. Read More »

Avicii redefined the sound of (mainstream) EDM with debut LP True by blending folk/acoustic elements (see smash hits “Wake Me Up” and “Hey Brother”) into his heady synthscape. The Swedish hitmaker is determined to repeat the feat again — by collaborating with a series of rockers including Jon Bon Jovi, Serj Tankian of System Of A Down and Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong on his sophomore set.

There’s even a reggae song on the opus featuring Wyclef Jean and Matisyahu.”It’s going to be a lot more song-oriented,” Avicii says of the album. “True was an attempt at that, getting electronic music in a song format.” I’m not sure how I feel about this. The 24-year-old’s collaboration with Coldplay was surprisingly great but the idea of Serj Tankian voicing a club anthem makes my blood run cold. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt for now. Lorde’s hit track “Tennis Court” first got a stunningly spacey remix by Aussie beatsmith Flume back in April, and now it seems that Diplo is up to bat. Fittingly named the “Andre Agassi Reebok Pump Mix,” the rework transforms the original song into a club banger but leaves Lorde’s sultry vocals virtually untarnished, a feat that only Diplo can so effortlessly execute.  So leave that Agassi mullet at home, and get your twerk moves at the ready because, let’s just say, “it’s a new art form showing people how little we care.” Listen to the track after the jump. Ed's Song For Hil
Ed Sheeran opens up on writing Hilary Duff's new single. Read More »

The comeback of the year (or perhaps the millennium) is almost upon us! We know that Hilary Duff is unveiling her new single at Marquee nightclub in New York City on July 24 but the crazily-anticipated jam now has a name. According to several pop sites, the Ed Sheeran-penned opus is called “Chasing The Sun” and there’s even promotional artwork (above).

In a recent interview, Ed described the song as “good” — which is a relief — and declared that Hil is going for “more of an adult alternative acoustic sound”. Sounds promising. “Chasing The Sun” has a lot to live up to, particularly given Charli XCX‘s recent revelation that “Boom Clap” was written for (but rejected by) the girl formerly known as Lizzie Mcguire. Nicki Minaj Jumps On The Remix Of August Alsina’s “No Love”: Listen

Nicki Minaj certainly gets around. The 31-year-old is currently promoting The Pink Print lead single “Pills N Potions” as well as Usher collaboration “She Came To Give It To You”. On top of that, she has a feature on Jessie J‘s star-studded new single and recently jumped on the remix of August Alsina‘s surprisingly romantic “No Love”.

Taken from the rising hip-hop star’s debut LP Testimony, which recently debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, “No Love (remix)” begins with Nicki exclaiming: “I swear this is my favorite song!” The 21-year-old then starts crooning about his lady before the femcee steps in for a sassy verse. “You can’t treat me like you treat them, I am the creme de la creme,” she spits over the languid beat. Sam Smith Announces New Single, “I’m Not The Only One”: Listen

Sam Smith is completely and utterly crushing it this summer, having already rocketed straight to the top of the charts in both the UK and stateside (a record-breaking debut!) with his critically acclaimed debut studio album, In The Lonely Hour. (Yes, we loved it too.) At the same time, his latest heart-wrenching single “Stay With Me” continues to sit pretty at Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

And he’s not stopping there, either: Today, the UK soul-pop singer announced the latest single from his debut LP: “I’m Not The Only One,” due out on August 31 in the UK and, presumably, making its way stateside sometime later in the year.

Like much of Smith’s work, the piano-led, marching midtempo is an aching case of unrequited love — or, at least, the ache of not being the only love. “When you call me baby, I know I’m not the only one,” he devastatingly croons. Listen to the track after the jump, and let us know what you think of the single selection in the comments below. More »
