Here’s an unexpectedly great shot of electro-pop from Salt Lake City, Utah! Newcomers Oh, Be Clever — a duo consisting of vocalist Brittney Shields and music man Cory Scott Layton — impress with infectious new single “Next To You”, which sounds like a cross between La Roux and Phantogram. (Not exactly a bad thing).
The synth-splattered, ’80s-referencing anthem was born when the pair went through brutal break-ups at the same time. ”[It was] the kind of breakup that makes you question your sanity at all hours of everyday,” explains Brittney. “I had to constantly see pictures of him and his new girlfriend all over social media, and it KILLED me inside.” Been there. Selena Gomez has been laying low since checking into rehab earlier this year but her Instagram game remains as flawless as ever. The most elegant princess in the world regularly updates her account with artistic images — nobody chooses a better filter than Sel! — and happy snaps.
Recent highlights include the Stars Dance diva rocking a bindi, reclining on a couch and smiling in her car. Things are going to get hectic for Selena very soon (she has new music, movies and several live performances looming) but, in the meantime, play “Nobody Does It Like You” and peruse the 21-year-old’s best Insta-updates up top. Katy Perry is all about letting the light in but you can bet she typed her reply to Miley Cyrus‘ explosive tweet with gritted teeth. Earlier today (March 6) the serial twerker caused major social media chaos by responding to a quip the 29-year-old made to Australian media about their concert kiss with a missive basically telling her to be more concerned about where John Mayer‘s mouth has been.
In a measured response, Katy tweeted: “I’m gonna give you the BIGGEST spanking when I see you in the UK bb!” It’s certainly in keeping with the Prism diva’s colorful and fun image but occasionally you have to clap back and this seemed like as good an opportunity as any. To be a fly on the wall the next time they cross paths! See her tweet after the jump. More »
Taylor Henderson came second on X Factor Australia in 2013 but he certainly won the chart battle when his genuinely great debut single “Borrow My Heart” shot to number one and sold double platinum. The Victorian followed that with an album of songs he performed on the show (it also topped the charts) but now returns with new material.
“When You Were Mine” is a country-tinged acoustic pop song in the mold of “Borrow My Heart”. It’s a good sound for Taylor and he will, no doubt, make the ladies swoon with his tale of love lost. Oh and “I’ve got a hand-me-down heart filled with second-hand love” is potentially the best opening line of any song released in 2014. Watch the cute video after the jump. More »
Japanese pop fans always get a special treat when an album is released in their country. Lea Michele continues the tradition by gifting them a special Louder bonus track called “To Find You”. Penned by hitmaker du jour Bonnie McKee, the pretty and obviously rather personal mid-tempo guitar ballad is well worth a listen.
“Lately life is like a dream, watching it through a smoky screen,” Lea sings softly over strummed guitars. “Finding wings to slip away until I can be with you someday.” It always surprises me when something great is relegated to bonus track status but the phenomenon is not exactly rare. A Japanese fan kindly uploaded a very LQ version to YouTube (listen after the jump) but it will do until a better version arrives. More »
Ed Sheeran sat down for a chat with Ryan Seacrest recently and found himself talking about his much-anticipated sophomore LP and new tattoos. The conversation soon turned to the Brit’s penchant for knocking out the odd cover version and “The A Team” singer then treated listeners to a brief snippet of Beyonce‘s “Drunk In Love”.
Bey’s meme-spawning anthem has been interpreted by everyone from Future (listen) to Angel Haze (listen) at this point but leave it to Ed transform “Drunk In Love” into a heartfelt acoustic bop. He only sang the intro but promised perform a full version on tour when he has had a chance to properly learn the words. Can’t wait! Watch up top. More »
