Whatever magical potion of longevity “Weird Al” Yankovic bathes in (we’re referring to his career here, sickos), it’s certainly doing the trick. The curly-weaved pop comedian chucked out eight music videos for songs off his new LP Mandatory Fun over eight days starting last week, and the resultant payoff is the first chart-topping album of Yankovic’s 31-year music career.
In total, Mandatory Fun sold 104,000 copies in its first week out of the gate, i.e. double the amount of what last week’s chart-topping album, Sia‘s 1000 Forms Of Fear, moved — a sure sign, music lovers, that the Alpocalypse is indeed nigh.
See where the rest of this week’s movers and shakers wound up in the upper tier of the Billboard 200 below. More »
Beyonce drove The Hive into a frenzy last night (July 22) by previewing a deluxe vinyl edition of her game-changing visual album. There was a limited edition German edition released last year but this is in a completely different league. For starters, the objet d’art has a gatefold cover and comes with a booklet of beautiful photos. It’s pretty much irresistible to record collectors.
So where can you buy it? That’s a great question. Queen Bey obviously wasn’t expecting that question — cue “Pretty Hurts” — because it’s not available to pre-order on her website yet. (There is, however, a Blue-Ray edition of the album that I didn’t know exists). More details will surely come to hand soon but start salivating over your next vinyl purchase after the jump. More »
Well, here’s something to brighten your day. Janet Jackson‘s 1990 chart-topper “Escapade” has been overhauled for 2014 by Nick*. The Chicago DJ does an amazing job of updating the classic hit without losing the original’s bubbly appeal. Think of his endearing “North Shore Remix” as the musical equivalent of a fresh coat of paint.
It’s great to hear something new from Jan even if it’s an unofficial remix. Six years have passed since the pop icon last blessed us with an album (2008′s underrated Discipline) and the world is ready for another opus — as long as she avoids those irritating interludes and keeps the pornographic bedroom jams to a minimum. Listen to the refreshed version of “Escapade” after the jump. More »
This summer’s most anticipated girl power anthem is nearly upon us: Jessie J‘s “Bang Bang,” featuring Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande, is heading our way next week on Tuesday, July 29.
After Jessie provided us with the first fiery preview of the tune earlier this month, Nicki’s come in with an assist today, showcasing just the teensiest hint of what sounds like an already blazing, mile-a-minute verse.
“It’s me, Jessie and Ari/If they test me, they sorry,” Nicki declares. With the “Break Free” mini-diva and “Pills N Potions” rapstress in her corner, it seems like Jessie J’s truly poised for a proper American takeover this time around. Are you ready for this powerhouse (bang) banger? Listen to the Instagram teasers after the jump, then let us know what you think so far in the comments below. More »
With the self-titled debut LP dropping this week, 5 Seconds Of Summer has ramped up the promo with a slew of live appearances including a mini-concert on the Today Show and an excursion to SiriusXM Hits 1 to perform a bunch of hits and a surprise cover of Katy Perry‘s seminal pop anthem “Teenage Dream”. And they did it justice.
The Aussie band stripped the song back to basics, delivering an acoustic version with a slight rock twist. Katy’s mega-hit survives the genre transition effortlessly and it’s nice to hear “Teenage Dream” performed by actual teenagers. 5SOS can’t lose at the moment. According to early predictions, their album will debut at number one on the Billboard 200 with sales of 250,000+ copies. More »
Sound the alarm, because the Duffpocalypse is upon us! (This is a good — no, make that utterly fantastic — thing.) This morning brought single release details for Hilary Duff‘s comeback song “Chasing The Sun,” and now, a few hours later, we have the first snippet of what’s to come.
Hilary herself posted a short Instagram video teasing the song, wherein she somersaults across a bed, prances around and paws at the air like wild, untamed Kitten Of Song as the Colbie Caillat co-write trickles through from the background. It was, in Duff’s own words, “how I started my morning.”
So far “Chasing The Sun” is sounding like a breezy, summery jangle-pop number. Listen and watch below, and let us know what you think! More »
