Happy Friday, Idolator readers! Are you ready for your pop knowledge quiz? Let’s review what happened this week, shall we?
All eyes were on Taylor Swift as the country-pop diva held a Yahoo live-stream to reveal details about her fifth studio album 1989, which will be released in October. Tay also premiered her Max Martin/Shellback-produced single “Shake It Out” as well as the track’s dorky video. What’s more, Nicki Minaj dropped her jungle-themed, sweaty and ass-tastic visual for “Anaconda,” Scottish beatsmith Calvin Harris previewed a clip of “Blame” with British crooner John Newman, and Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett shared their tracklist for their jazz album, Cheek To Cheek.
Here on Idolator, we premiered Benny Benassi’s latest single “Shooting Helicopters” with System of a Down’s Serj Tankian and, in lieu of the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, held our first-ever glamour-filled Idolator Floppy Awards.
As always, you guys had plenty to say. Read the week’s best comments below! More »
Tinashe cemented her status as R&B’s new ‘it’ girl with breakthrough hit “2 On”. The slinky, ’90s-inspired banger evoked memories of Aaliyah and Cassie (before she became a full-time model) but the rising star widens her soundscape on sublime follow-up single “Pretend”. She’s now bordering on mid-tempo Janet Jackson territory, which is a very good thing.
Produced by Detail and featuring a verse from A$AP Rocky, the languid synth-jam finds Tinashe ruminating on the state of her relationship. She somewhat sadly suggests to her man that they pretend they were right back at the beginning in order to recapture that initial spark and lost trust. Her delicate vocal suits the slick production perfectly and the subtle chorus is a killer. Listen after the jump. More »
Jessie J unveiled the title and striking cover of her third LP Sweet Talker yesterday (August 21). The Brit is obviously in a generous mood because she shared the artwork for the deluxe edition this morning and then announced the full tracklist, which features comeback hit “Bang Bang” — obviously — as well as some very surprising collaborations.
For starters, the “Wild” diva teams up with hip hop veterans De La Soul on “Seal Me With A Kiss” and violinist Lindsey Stirling on “Loud”. Then there’s the 2 Chainz collab “Burning Up”, which she spoke about when we interviewed her recently. The line-up of producers is equally tantalizing. The reformed bisexual worked with Max Martin, Ricky Reed and Diplo. See the full tracklist after the jump. More »
Coldplay has really upped the visual ante during the Ghost Stories era. The band took a spooky stroll through their woods in their dark and distorted “Midnight” video, put on an old-fashioned carnival show in “Magic” and took to the streets of Sydney, Australia for their “A Sky Full Of Stars” visual. They were all striking in their own way but “True Love” could be their best yet.
Directed by Jonas Akerlund, the whimsical clip tells an unusual love story. There’s a sumo suit-wearing ballerina who is deemed too fat for the stage but refuses to give up on her dream to dance. She crosses paths with Chris Martin, who shares her passion and size. Before you can grab a tissue to dab your eyes, they’re in love and dancing together. Watch up top. More »
Hats off to Nicki Minaj. When the lead single from The Pink Print failed to fire (the insomnia-curing “Pills N Potions”), she simply engineered a hit by sampling a hip-hop classic and making a semi-pornographic video for those all important YouTube streams. The next thing you know, “Anaconda” is top five on iTunes and just broke the 24-hour VEVO record. Well played.
If the original version shrinks your anaconda into a dirt worm, never fear. The always on-point LA Leakers (four DJs from, you guessed it, the City of Angels) bring Riff Raff into the fray — turning Nicki’s (not so) high-brow anthem into a true party-starter. Listen to the balls-to-the-wall remix after the jump. Your weekend playlist demands it! More »
