Remember when Lady Gaga‘s “Dope” reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 after an awards show performance and fell out of the top 50 the following week? That was an extreme example of the power of streaming in determining chart position. YouTube views, viral videos and Vevo premieres are now a major variable in landing a hit.
And when it comes to generating attention, sex is still the answer. Miley Cyrus‘ nude ride on a wrecking ball caught everyone’s attention, Robin Thicke and his scantily clad ladies helped make “Blurred Lines” the biggest hit of the veteran crooner’s career and Katy Perry‘s cleavage-showcasing jungle jaunt helped propel “Roar” to number one.
It almost goes without saying that those three eye-popping visuals appear on Vevo’s list of the 10 most-watched music videos of 2013 but there are some surprises. Will.i.am and Britney Spears‘ “Scream & Shout” video punched above its weight as did One Direction‘s “Kiss You”. The big spoiler? Well, see for yourself after the jump. More »
The jubilant, pregnant Kelly Clarkson stopped by Ellen earlier today to talk with Ellen Degeneres about a litany of issues — but really, it was all about her morning sickness — as well as to perform her Yuletide classic “Underneath The Tree” from her platinum-selling Christmas album Wrapped In Red. Between sounding off on crazy celebrity baby names and asking for a bucket (seriously), the pop songstress made quite the impression. Was she hormonal or is she always that giddy? Who cares! It’s adorable.
As usual, her vocal performance on “Underneath The Tree” was unparalleled — but then, it’s Kelly Clarkson. She always delivers. More »
We’re treated to a blast from a hypothetical Christmas past with last night’s episode, “Previously Unaired Christmas.” While it is actually a new episode, it’s intended to be a peek at what was going on with the Glee kids during the 2012 holiday season. Everyone gets a chance to wax nostalgic and learn a little lesson about the spirit of Christmas.
Sue Sylvester introduces the episode in a beautifully decorated living room, complete with gorgeous felt stockings hung by the chimney with care. She explains the flashback premise, and so it begins! More »
Brandi Cyrus caused a stir when she worked the red carpet at this year’s American Music Awards as a correspondent for Spin Media. For starters, she looked incredible and turned out to be a wiz with a microphone. But there’s more to Miley‘s older sister than good looks and interview skills.
The 26-year-old plans to take the fashion world by storm and is part of an alt-pop duo called Frank + Derol. The band is on hiatus at the moment due to label issues, which is a shame because their music is very good. A good example is their unreleased cover of “Silver Bells” with Paper Route frontman J.T. Daly.
The hazy, lo-fi approach brings a new perspective to the Christmas standard and the harmonies are on point. I caught up with Brandi to chat about the track, her future music plans and other exciting endeavors. Listen to the song and see what’s next from Ms. Cyrus after the jump. More »
In a victory for fine taste and good judgement, Miley Cyrus has settled on Oren Yoel-produced slow jam “Adore You” as the third single from Gold-selling LP Bangerz. According to a brief press release, the dreamy tune will impact top 40 radio on January 6.
While it’s unusual for a pop act to release consecutive ballads, dropping “Adore You” is a no-brainer. Hailed by critics as a Bangerz highlight and warmly embraced by fans (as displayed by its ongoing popularity on iTunes and number 42 peak on the Billboard Hot 100), the Stacy Barthe-penned poem has universal appeal.
Why? Because it shows how great Miley could be with the right material. Her throaty twang effortlessly sails over the minimal alt-R&B/country production, while the lyrics are as timeless as they are lovely. “When you’re near me I feel like I’m standing with an army,” she croons before simply declaring “I adore you” in the chorus. It’s been a bit quiet on the Iggy Azalea front lately. Touring the globe and putting the finishing touches on your much-anticipated (and delayed) debut album can be time consuming! Happily, the Australian rap goddess has taken pity on parched Azaleans and shared a slinky new jam called “Leave It”.
Produced by DJ Mustard, the minimal yet extremely catchy beat provides the perfect platform for Iggy to spit bars about her booming career. “Gotta know that I’m prepared for ya,” she raps. “Tell he how you want it, Imma leave it right there for it.” Listen to the “Change Your Life” femcee’s latest after the jump.
