The ladies of UK girl group Neon Jungle continue to set themselves apart from the pack with the video for their new single “Braveheart,” one of the most blisteringly cool dance-pop singles in a long while. Following up their excellent debut single “Trouble” and their debut televised stateside performance (last night on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show), the four-piece act have stepped up their game even further with “Braveheart,” which is weird, dark, pummeling and thoroughly out-of-the-box.
Produced by More Mega (who also helmed Havana Brown‘s ubiquitous “We Run The Night”), the song sounds like a ravey radio smash in the making, and the video is a perfect complement; featuring the girls in darkened, red-and-green-hued spaces and also, inexplicably, a lion (why not?), they’re proving their mettle as the most intimidatingly fierce girl group around. You marveled at their vocal abilities on The Sing-Off last year. You sent made their first LP PTX, Volume 1 a Top 20 hit and sent PTX, Volume II into the Top 10 this fall. Their Daft Punk mash-up titled, well, “Daft Punk” has millions of YouTube views because you just kept watching over and over and over. They’re a cappella group Pentatonix, everyone, and last night the quintet made an appearance on Conan to perform their own “Hey Momma” mixed with the rock classic “Hit The Road Jack.” (Watch above)

Well! The American Country Awards, an awards show that somebody made up four years ago, happened last night in Las Vegas, with Danica Patrick and Trace Adkins (or, as they’re known in places like New York City, “Who?” and “What?”) hosting, and it was a doggedly country-centric affair. (That means less in the way of love for crossover stars like Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood, and more praise showered on people who don’t get played on pop radio.)
This year’s breakout bro-country stars Florida Georgia Line and Luke Bryan led the awards, as Florida Georgia Line took home six statues (or whatever they give out at the ACAs), while Luke Bryan received the Artist of the Year award. Taylor Swift, of course, still got some glory, as her collab with Tim McGraw and Keith Urban, “Highway Don’t Care,” won three trophies, including for Song of the Year. Blake Shelton (another familiar name!) also received four awards. More »
Rick Ross pushed back the release of Mastermind to 2014, but he’s using the extra time to build up unreasonably huge expectations, in classic Rozay fashion. Last night (December 10), Maybach Music Group’s official Twitter account said the album’s Jay Z collaboration, “The Devil Is A Lie,” is the “biggest record you’ll ever hear in your life.” Sure! (Jay appeared on the MMG honcho’s last album, along with Dr. Dre, on “3 Kings.” Never one to undersell a project, Ross teased that track by calling it a “masterpiece” and “the biggest collaboration in hip-hop.”)

When you scan the Billboard 200 album chart positions this week, you won’t find Britney Spears‘ Britney Jean at #1. That spot belongs to country mainstay Garth Brooks, whose collection Blame It All On My Roots: Five Decades Of Influences sold 146,000 copies in its second week of release — enough to hop up from #3 to the top. The #2 and #3 positions seem to have eluded Britney as well, as they belong to previous chart-topper Midnight Memories by One Direction (117,000) and Kelly Clarkson‘s Wrapped In Red (112,000), respectively.
When all was said and done, Britney Jean sold 107,000 copies and thus comes in at #4, her lowest-charting album in the US to date. (Six of her previous seven albums debuted at #1, while 2007′s Blackout hit #2.)
The upside: At least the album didn’t fare as poorly here as it did overseas, where it debuted at #34 over the weekend on the UK album chart. The downside: Christina Aguilera‘s notorious 2010 flop Bionic entered the Billboard 200 at #3, and sold 3,000 more copies than Britney Jean did out of the gate. It’s time for Kanye West‘s annual Bashing Of The Grammys, truly the most wonderful time of the year. During his Yeezus tour show in Phoenix, West addressed the fact that he only managed to score two Grammy nominations, which really is all kinds of bogus. “Yeezus is the top one or two album on every single list,” he told the crowd, “but only gets two nominations from the Grammys. What are they trying to say?”
It’s true: Yeezus has landed in the #1 spot of nearly every major list of 2013′s best albums: Rolling Stone, SPIN, EW, Stereogum, Complex and even freaking Time have him at #1 (He also made our top 10, at #4). And the LP isn’t just a critical darling: it debuted with 327,000 sales, at the time the year’s third-highest opening week.
That said, leaving Yeezus out of the Album of the Year category makes sense. The music is simply too confrontational and abrasive for that honor, which was the point of this album in the first place. West wanted to buck the mainstream. Well, this is what happens when you buck the mainstream. Kanye wants to have it both ways, because that’s his entire MO, and that’s why he’s so interesting/infuriating.
But the merits of Yeezus are incidental to this particular issue. More »
