Listen Without Prejudice: Ai Otsuka's J-Pop Pandemonium

Maybe the reason TRL is struggling these days is because its producers would never run a clip that includes a soap-covered nude drummer, a bathroom-set dance routine, and a smattering of birth-canal imagery (at least, we think that's birth-canal imagery). Thankfully, nobody in Japan shares such lofty standards, and so they get to watch fun J-Pop clips like Ai Otsuka's "Chu Lip," which was unearthed by TV In Japan, and which translates roughly into English as "There Will Be Break-Dancing Near A Vagina, Yes?"

Listen Without Prejudice: Idolator's Foreign-Exchange Program

Mexican rap/rock fusion act Molotov may or may not have broken up: Wikipedia says yes, the band's Web site says maybe. Either way, they haven't put out a new album since 2004, but for a brief moment, Molotov was on top of the rock en español world, baiting Latin rock stars Mana with the title of their first album and appearing on the Y Tu Mamá También soundtrack. Employing a charmingly childish mix of girls, girls, and dislike of authority, Molotov managed to have their albums banned in Mexico for a minute. Their most recent record, Con Todo Respecto covers tracks from the Misfits, Falco, and Los Amantes de Lola, and broken up or not, Molotov has taught us many new bits of Spanish profanity to mix into our casual speech. Japanese Moog enthusiast Takako Minekawa's bright pop takes its cues from Kraftwerk and Francois Hardy, and she adds an in-the-bedroom flair that's as cute as the cross-stitches in the "Milk Rock" video (above). The two tracks below are from her out-of-print 1996 album Roomic Cube, which is fetching quite a bit of money on the used market. The calliope-led "Fantastic Cat," told from the point of view of a tech-savvy feline, is ridiculously catchy, and the saucy "Klaxon!" drops into a speeded-up synth freak-out in the middle, but it has absolutely nothing to do with New Rave: More »

Bombay Connection Records' Bombshell Baby Of Bombay compiles 12 songs that scored nightclub scenes of Bollywood films from 40 years ago, including Mohammed Rafi's "Jan Pahechan Ho" (above), which appeared in the 1965 film Gumnaam. The disc is painstakingly put together and annotated, with notes and stills on each film, essays, and English translations of the lyrics; we're especially fond of the 1960 track that lent the compilation its title, which has a particularly sick horn section: More »

The Spanish pop outfit Le Mans was initially brought to our attention by the great indie label Grimsey—the 1994 song "Un Rayo De Sol" was the first Le Mans song we heard, and it's hard not to be instantly smitten with its walk-in-the-park groove. Their breezy, seductive pop output continued until 1998, when they announced that they were breaking up through three successive 7-inch covers spelling "F-I-N." More »

French chanteuse/comedienne Valerie Lemercier's saucy Valerie Lemercier chante always perks up our day, even if our high-school-honed knowledge of her mother tongue has atrophied considerably—"Goûte mes frites" is a particular favorite of ours, especially since we put the lyrics through Babelfish, and it seems like she's consoling a down-in-the-dumps pal by offering up her fries. Now that is friendship. More »

Now that Brazil has been placed under the same file-sharing scrutiny as the rest of the world, we can't think of a better time to give the country its own "Listen Without Prejudice" write-up. Alas, our Brazilian collection is a bit lacking, so we'll have to focus on Soul Jazz's excellent Sexual Life Of The Savages collection, which chronicles São Paulo's new-wave and post-punk scene in the early '80s. Check out two of our favorite tracks below, and make sure to click here if you get lost in translation: More »

Welcome to another edition of "Listen Without Prejudice," a feature that finds us spinning a globe, pointing our finger on a random region, and sampling some local tunes. We're heading to Japan again, and while we'd like to give you a proper set-up for this artist, sometimes, you just have to let a Wikipedia entry speak for itself: More »

Listen Without Prejudice: Idolator's Foreign-Music Exchange

It's been a while since our last edition of "Listen Without Prejudice," our semi-regular feature spotlighting non-English speak bands with whom we've become obsessed—despite not having the damndest clue what they're singing about. This week's entry features a concert clip from The Blue Hearts, a Japanese power-pop band who we first heard a few years ago at New York City's Village Karaoke (R.I.P.). We have no idea how recently this performance went off, but the song—an astoundingly catchy song that we're assuming is called "Linda Linda"—has been a hit in Japan for years. If you guys go for this, be warned: We can go a bit crazy with the Japanese rock. More »

Listen Without Prejudice: Idolator's Foreign-Exchange Program

For reasons best left unsaid (it involves a cruise ship and karaoke), one of your Idolators spent some time this month in the Helsinki airport, which is basically a heavily secured shopping mall. After stocking up on reindeer patties, we grabbed a two-disc set called Suomipoppia 8, a title that translates into English as "garish, tangentially related album cover." More »
